POPE: 117 CARDINALS ON STANDBY FOR CONCLAVE
AGI ^

(AGI) - Vatican City, Apr 1 - It has been over a month that the mass media report the Vatican opinions of the influential ecclesiastical exponents to succeed Pope John Paul II. There are now 117 cardinals who would participate to a possible conclave: it was in the last couple of days that Angolan Alexandre do Nascimento and Ecuadorean Antonio Jose' Gonzalez Zumarraga turned 80. The next cardinal to come out of the electors will be the Emeritus Patriarch of Venice, Marco Ce', who will turn 80 on July 8. The Italian contingent until then will be composed of twenty cardinals and even after Ce's leaving will still be the largest: in the cardinal college; all five continents are present numbering 66 countries, 52 of which have cardinal electors and among these besides Italy only the USA, with 11 members, exceed the threshold of ten representatives in the conclave. It is not by chance that the group of Italian cardinals is largest and this massive presence will not be non-influential in a possible conclave. Among the twenty Italian cardinals the most popular name is Milan Archbishop Dionigi Tettamanzi's.

I was kind of thinking that the Pope would be there to greet Terri in heaven, but Terri will get to greet him.

God, bless these souls.

It has been so long since we have witnessed this process. The world is different with cell phones (with cameras no less), the internet, blackberrys, etc. I wonder how the Vatican will cope with all the electronic prying eyes that will try to see what it going on in the conclave.

I am planning on being in Rome in a few weeks. While I pray for John Paul's recovery, I have to admit it would be quite an experience to stand in the square and watch for the puff of smoke.

They are a little premature to put out stuff like this.

Lucid, conscious, serene is the report I just saw on FoxNews Channel.

Correct, but any physician will tell you this is textbook end-of-the-road with Parkinsons. The Vatican keeps its cards close to its chest. The medical statements and road closures are not publicity stunts.

Still, God has the last word. He may yet recover, but he is only human.

The front-runner most speculated upon, Cardinal Tettamanzi, was born in 1934. The Vatican may see him as a good interim Pope after the present Pope's long tenure. Tettamanzi was appointed archbishop of Milan not too long ago, where both St. Ambrose and Paul VI were also once bishops. Tettamanzi once said, "man does not exist for globalization, but globalization for man". The present Pope approves of Cardinal Tettamanzi and that may be a factor in why his name has been suggested as a likely choice by the conclave.

MAIDA Adam Joseph . 18-Mar-30 . U.S.A.

I received my Confirmation from him at age 29. I had never before and have not since seen eyes like that. I am not overly religious, never have been, probably never will be but it was honestly incredible.

I highly doubt that the electronic age will"pry into" the conclave for two reasons

1)There's too much respect for the duties the cardinals have in front of them

2) The Italian people will not allow it.
