THE Moderator of the Church of Scotland, Dr Alison Elliot, is to visit Auschwitz to pay respects to the only known Scots victim of the Holocaust.
Dr Elliot will travel to Poland and the Czech Republic next week, and will visit the notorious death camp on Tuesday.
While there she will pay tribute to Jane Haining, who was born at Dunscore, Dumfriesshire, and worked with children at the Church of Scotland Mission to the Jews in Budapest.
Miss Hanning refused to abandon the children in her care, and as a consequence was arrested by Nazi forces after their advance into Hungary in March 1944. She is thought to have died at Auschwitz in August of that same year.
In 1997, Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Martyrs and Heroes Memorial in Jerusalem, awarded Jane Haining a medal and a place among the Righteous Among the Nations at a ceremony in Glasgow.
The first stop on the Moderator’s nine-day trip will be in Warsaw, where she will tour part of the city prior to dining with the British Ambassador in the city.
She will fly on to Prague on Wednesday, where she will meet with members of the Ecumenical Council of Churches in the Czech Republic and the Evangelical Church of the Czech Brethren.
