Mahony Flies To Rome For Solemnities, Conclave

By K. Connie Kang
Times Staff Writer

April 2, 2005

"As he prepared to fly to Rome to probably attend the funeral of the current pope and help elect a new one, Cardinal Roger M. Mahony of Los Angeles asked for spiritual help to get through the momentous events ahead.

"I ask all the people in Southern California to pray for all the cardinals — that we listen wisely to God's voice, the Holy Spirit, and that we choose wisely the next shepherd of the universal church," Mahony told reporters Friday night at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.

Mahony had celebrated a noon and a 5 p.m. Mass before heading to LAX and ... (Snip) ...then Rome."

"As with many of the other cardinals who will choose a successor to John Paul II, this would be Mahony's first participation in such a conclave. He described himself as being "very excited but also nervous."

Mahony, whose diocese includes an estimated 5 million Roman Catholics in Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, said the pope had been given a "very special grace" to know that death was near.

"We hear so often about people who are killed instantly ... and have no time to prepare for the greatest moment of our lives — passing from this life into eternal life," Mahony said.

In Rome, he and other cardinals from around the world will be asked to set dates for nine funeral Masses, Mahony said. He said the pope's burial should take place between the fourth and sixth day after his death..."

"...Only the Holy Spirit knows how that will unfold, he said, declining to speculate on candidates..."

The MSNBC people were quick to say "let's not read into it" but she also said she wasn't accustomed to hearing the bells at the bottom of the hour...

Who won't be in Sistine Chapel this time?
You mean the cardinals when they sleep?
I know they'll be staying at St Martha's... the suites that JPI had built to accomodate them.

It's a sort of luke-warm, protestantized version of Catholicism. It's hard to define. Think of horrible architecture in new churches, and liturgical dance, and dumbed-down liturgies with less kneeling (or no kneelers at all). Think of Rembert Weakland and his ilk going around tearing out communion rails and 'modernizing' churches by moving the sanctuary to a prayer room and discouraging or cancelling Adoration of the Blessed Sacrement and the Stations, think of gender-neutral translations of the bible readings.

Tiny abuses nibbling at the edges until the 'universal' church is not recognizable at all.

We don't eat meat on Friday's here either,
and I rarely go to Mass without my lace scarf.
I love tradition.

I don't think they'll even vote there (Sistine Chapel). Yes, the new facilities.

Onyx, I found some of my Mother's old cherished lace scarves in some of her things - brought back so many memories... goose bumps.

I want someone to rebuke the AmChurch movement. I doubt it will happen, but it should be done.

I'd love to see that, but we wouldn't want an open schism. There's other ways to do it, such as not approving ICEL liturgical translations, etc.

I had my confirmation with him.

One thing I can tell you is who ever the Pope will be, isn't going to be an American.

Thank you Onyx. I probably shouldn't have brought personal loss into this thread, just thought of her and my Dad.

LOL!
But, beware... I was told on another thread earlier today,
that EWTN parroted the mistaken news about the Pope's death.
I had rushed home at Noon and turned on EWTN and then posted I had done so for "accuracy." LOL. Boy,, did I get straightened out fast.
