New system will feed state's electricity needs

Four governors, including Schwarzenegger, agree to build $20 billion transmission facility and lines.

Reuters

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and the governors of Nevada, Utah and Wyoming have agreed to build an estimated $20 billion electricity transmission system to meet rising demand for power, Wyoming's governor said Monday.

Wyoming Gov. Dave Freudenthal said on a conference call the "Frontier Line" system would supply electricity-hungry California - where power demand is growing at about 4 percent annually, or double the national average - with power from nearby energy-producing states.

Fast-growing Las Vegas and Salt Lake City also would be served by the system, which is expected to need up to $5 billion in transmission lines and facilities and up to $15 billion in power plants.

Good for Wyoming.

Lot of energy lose along those lines though, but it must be less than moving the coal by trains.

With Calif. being all green, maybe they should insist that the endless Wyoming wind be part of the source as well.

and what, pray tell, are they gonna use for money? LOL

do I see another bond issue in our future...

by the time Ahnold gets out of Sacramento we are gonna be so much in debt; we're not going to be able to afford to "pay attention"

Buried in the article is a fact that power plants are a part of this effort to del;iver 12 ,000 megawatts, half thru coal powered plants and HALF thru WIND power!!!

OH ...OH....

Sounds like a good idea. Since California needs more power and has this phobia about building power plants within the state, getting more out of state power is the only solution.

I don't like the plan to get half thru WIND power...that's dorky...needs to be financed properly also.

wind power?
more BS

sounds like another pork barrel spending program for some Ahnold campaign supporter. LOL

They should just build nuclear/desalination plants out in the ocean...two birds with one rock...
electricity & water!

From reading the article, it appears that the power plants will be independantly operated by private parties. I'll bet it never happens that half the power on the transmission line comes from windfarms. Someone is blowing smoke.

The Wyoming coal trains are feeding the older electric plants in the Eastern half of the USA. They are very busy. 2-3 locomotives, 120 cars each. Saw lots of them riding the Pony Express Trail in 2001. Impressive.

My current project is hosted on 5 coal cars in Alabama. When I finish hardware/software upgrades next week, those cars will be headed for a fill up at the Powder River Basin in Wyoming. That coal has a low sulfur content necessary to meet emissions requirements. The heat content is lower, so they have to burn more. The plant where I'm working next week burns 45 tons per minute. It is a 4 GW facility. About 1/3 of what California is expecting.

I noticed these are all Republican Governors in these states.....it is a great plan. Burn the coal at the source and export the smog, build the wind projects along the new transmission lines.

Look for PGE, SCE, LADWP and SCPPA to all complain, as they have an invested interested in the status quo.

A lot more trains than that!

139,629 carloads of coal a week in the United States.

"we're not going to be able to afford to "pay attention"

And... we've got all these danged problems with our government BECAUSE we didn't/don't pay enough attention in relation to the taxes we've been paying!!!

It's exactly like Will Rogers said: "Thank God we're not gittin alla the government we been payin for!"

Wind Power can provide ALLof the US's needs. Only Dorks don't see the obvious. Guess what was used to drain the Zyder Zee. Garland Texas has a wind farm in its capital budget for 2007. Makes sense, its renewable and that's the fact Jack!

How do like your eagle...baked or fried? Wind power means dead birds. Do you want to know that every time you turn on the microwave, you're helping to kill innocent birds??!!

I'd turn off my sarcasm switch, but it gets stuck from time to time.

Southern Cal Edison...talk about a rude and nasty bunch of clowns to deal with...if I could have switched I would have done it years ago! LOL
