The bottom line: The conventional wisdom is off. Convential wisdom is off a heck of a lot more than it is on.

I don't think it hurt the GOP. I didn't like the idea of them stepping on the state but I didn't see any other choice.

The conventional wisdom shows just how far off base the govt. and mainstream media are from the values of the people.

Good news on some levels, but I found this rather alarming:
A majority of those questioned said elected officials should not intervene when the courts deny rights to the disabled and that elected officials shouldn't intervene to protect a disabled person's right to live... I think organizations supporting the disabled need to do a bit more publicity work on this one!
That said, however, I agree that the GOP position will emerge as the favored one, no matter what the press says. Most Dems, after all, tried to avoid saying anything at all about the case, simply because they knew that the GOP position was not only right but was going to be the popular one, even though they are so pro-death they could not bring themselves to support it.
The GOP should be proud of its efforts in this case, although perhaps ashamed that they failed in the long run, and should not back off from the issue, as it is doing now. The GOP always backs down in the face of media pressure, and it's a stupid short-sighted move, especially in this case.

For me personally, the initial intervention didn't cause any harm. What disturbs me most is the lack of resolve and follow through and allowing a tin horn probate judge to thumb his nose at Congressional Subpoenas.
If they follow through and act on this flagrant abuse of power by Greer, they will show me they have the guts to stand up. If not, they just weaken their standing within the party.
As I've said many times elsewhere, even when we disagree with someone, we tend to admire people who stick to their guns and act on their convictions.
The intervention may not hurt the party overall, but only time will tell how it effected individuals.

This is a typical example of the cooperation and coordination between the Democrats and the media. The media floods the airwaves and headlines with false information, then does a push poll based on that false information, gets the expected results, then touts the false information as true because the majority of Americans believe it. Happens all the time. They attempted it also during the 2004 election.

The positions in the polls are not inconsistent.
A majority of people may feel that Schiavo should have not been starved and also felt that it was not the Federal Government's business to get involved in the matter.

Pubbies were on both sides. Whether it hurt the party as a whole? I don't think so. I do believe that pubblies will remember Jeb Bush's part or lack thereof.

My 81 year old other has been a liberal political bell weather for years. She still hates George Bush, but she is now REALLLLY scared of the Democrats who she feels abandoned a vulnerable person who was essentially one of her peers. I think the GOP just received more credibility with the geriatric population.

The negative polls the MSM were trumpheting during the Terri Schiavo intervention were nothing but false advertisement. They mis-represented the facts and asked leading and mis-leading questions in their polls.
To: smoothsailing
If anything hurt the GOP it was the lack of intervention.
To: smoothsailing
As usual, when people have the benefit of the truth to guide their judgement and decision making-the democrats and their lying propaganda, lose.
The GOP is only hurt when the Democrats with the assistance of their MSM are able to deny air time to the truth.

in a poll commissioned by the Christian Defense Coalition,
Interesting how a poll commissioned by a group turns out results favorable for the group.

Standing up for true moral principle is understood in every era by every nation. It is persuasive in a way that propaganda and sophistry can never match. It speaks to the human spirit and turns hearts to the good.
The Republicans did something very, very right for once.

I'm glad to see this editorial, tho I wish it were in one of the major league newspapers.
Ever since the media started touting the polls that showed Terry Shiavo hurt republicans, I've been thinking "not so fast". All along I thought those misleading polls were intentionally taken way too soon. People hadn't had time to distinguish between Terry's condition and those people already at death's door. The polls added to that misconception, and it was done to affect the results, done to adversely impact republicans.
This has happened before, I know it has, but drats! I can't remember the exact instance which has given me such a strong sense of deja vu.
I've thought all along that these media polls on Terry Shiavo, would be added the long list of instances when the media was caught red-handed, distorting the news for democrats' political advantage.

So polls and the science behind them have not changed since last year during the election.
No matter how carefully the pollsters word the polls to get the answers they want, and no mater how hard the MSM tries to sway public opinion to their left-wing lunatic fringe thought process, when the choice is clear (this candidate versus that candidate) the people vote for life.

It is not the intervention that hurt the GOP, but the failure to save her life. Peggy Noonan warned about that and I believe correctly so.
