Networked computers -- sharing a printer between them -- HELP!
11 April 2005

Posted on 04/11/2005 7:14:19 PM PDT by MeneMeneTekelUpharsin

Please help. Have a machine with Windows XP Professional and one with Windows 2000. Sharing a printer (HP Laserjet 4L). Can't get the Windows 2000 machine (secondary) to print on the printer connected to the main machine (Windows XP) and both are networked and do share other files including internet. Have clicked boxes allowing for "sharing" and need help determining WHY machine 2 won't print on printer on machine 1 (which has printer connected.

If you can help...thanks in advance.

****This is for the XP computer as they can have enabled firewalls by default****

Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, and Network Connections.

Right click on the icon that represents your Local Area Connection and click Properties. Then you will see an advanced tab and you should see Windows Firewall and a Settings button. Click the settings button and make sure the firewall is disabled.

This is only for the native XP firewall that came with XP SP1, if there are other firewalls you may have I can't help ya there. Of course all of this is assuming that a firewall is the problem. It's also possible that your router isn't forwarding NETBIOS Traffic on your LAN.

Have you tried to delete the printer on the Win2k box and then re-add the network printer?

Thanks a million! It worked. I had set up the printer for the W2000 machine when it was ATTACHED to that machine. I needed to "Add Printer" and set it up for the printer on the workgroup network. Thank you very much.

Main Computer: First go the control panel, click on network connections, right click the connection and click on properties. Make sure that File and Printer Sharing is enabled. If not you will have to install it.

If it is go to your printer folder on the main computer and right click the printer and check the sharing tab and make sure the printer is set up for sharing, if not enable it and give it a name. In this properties section there is also a place to install additional drivers for your printer for other operating systems, do this since you will be using it on two different systems.

Second Computer: Go to the Printers folder and click on Add printer Icon, set up network printer, follow instructions and browse to the share name you made for the computer on the original machine.

All of this is based on you being able to see the other computer from each other through your Network Places Icon on the desktop

Hah. I got this to work. My wife will be so happy she doesn't have to drag her lap top over to the other room, disconnect the existing printer, and hook it up to hers. Had to vary things a bit - printer was on Windows ME and XP was in the other room. Had ZoneAlarm installed on the XP and in the Firewall setting I put the ip address for my ME machine in the trusted zone.

Wow, wonder if this thread will get pulled as it is out of scope?

I think you're right. You need to install the drivers for the printer on the remote computer. And, before Windows xp you needed to "capture" the printer or otherwise select it for use off the list of hardware available for use by the workgroup.

The printer needs to be installed on both computers, the printer needs to be made available for sharing by the host machine, then the printer needs to be selected by the remote computer.

WinXP is a step backwards.

No.  It's not.  It's the best OS MS has made thus far.  Which in some peoples opinion isn't saying much but, none the less, it IS a step forward from all the previous OSs.

the so called "security" is a pain in the a$$.

Everything's a pain in the ass when you don't know how to use it.  Don't blame MS because you're too lazy to figure it out.  And for God's sake, don't ever try a really secure OS like Unix or Linux.....you'll have an aneurysm.

you cannot share the drivers from the XP to other machines on your network. you need the cd-rom to install the drivers on the machine you want to print from.

Yes, you can.  Provided the printer manufacturer has designed the drivers for XP correctly...and that's hardly MSs problem.  The HP Laserjet 4L is a pretty old printer.  HP has not produced hard-core XP drivers for it.  The Laserjet 1012 on the other hand, was produced with XP in mind.  When you install the driver suite for printers like the 1012, HP adds drivers for other clients to not only connect but download the appropriate driver from the XP client machine.

pain. THANK YOU BILL GATES. This isn't progress!

Yes, it is.

Have you installed the printer drivers on both machines? And make sure both machines are on when printing. Secondary will not be able to access printer if Primary is powered off.
