MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A proposal to legalize the killing of feral cats is not going to succeed, Gov. Jim Doyle said Wednesday.
"I don't think Wisconsin should become known as a state where we shoot cats," said Doyle, a Democrat who neither hunts nor owns a cat. "What it does is sort of hold us up as a state that everybody is kind of laughing at right now."
He told reporters his office had received calls from around the country denouncing a proposal adopted Monday at meetings of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress, a public advisory group, that would classify wild, free-roaming cats as an unprotected species that kills song birds and other wildlife.
Outdoor enthusiasts approved the proposal 6,830 to 5,201 at Monday's spring hearings of the group.
The results get forwarded to the state Natural Resources Board for consideration, but any official action would have to be passed by the Legislature and signed by the governor.
Animal rights groups belittled the idea as inhumane and dangerous.
Doyle said he respects the Conservation Congress but "on this one I think everybody recognizes it's not going anywhere."
Some experts estimate that 2 million wild cats roam Wisconsin, and the state says studies show feral cats kill 47 million to 139 million songbirds a year.
South Dakota and Minnesota both allow wild cats to be shot.
Two state senators - Scott Fitzgerald and Neil Kedzie - had promised to do everything they can to keep the plan from becoming law.
Kedzie, who chairs the Natural Resources and Transportation Committee, called the issue "a distraction from the main tasks we have at hand."
How true. But, absent the cat issue, people are laughing at Wisconsin as a high tax state which has corrupt government officials (Chvala, the AG - Peggy Lotsoflager, Gary George, etc.,etc.,etc.) and an absolute boob for a Governor.
I bet the free republic cat fanatics are thrilled about the endorsement from a fine, upstanding thinker like 'diamond' jim doyle.
BTTT
"Two state senators - Scott Fitzgerald and Neil Kedzie - had promised to do everything they can to keep the plan from becoming law."
Great. Two republicans with their heads up their butts that are more worried about PR than the damage caused by these cats.
LOL I didn't think you would survive the night with all the implied threats against you.
I do alright. Plus it was helpful to exhibit the hatred and rage from all the people claiming to be so 'enlightened' that they labeled supporters of the bill 'bloodthirsty'.
"Here, kitty-kitty".....*THUMP!* "I GOT 'EM!!!" Cats are really crafty and sly creatures to hunt. /s
Give it a rest. Someone actually has some common sense on this issue. I realize you won't be able to hunt the big game legally now but hamster season is almost upon us.
Wow. That almost rose above the level of 'lame reply'. Keep trying, someday you'll get there.
Common sense doesn't apply to the cat fanatics. Just the love of their sweet, lovable mr. whiskers who could never hurt a fly.
No he wouldn't, would you my precious wescious widdle mistew whiskers???
Note: The above sentence demonstrates the average amount of logic used by the cat fanatics on the feral cat threads.
the ferals in my 'burb
keep the grackles at bay...cheaper than ammo...
Where are the Viking Kitties when you need them? :)
Professional help is available, all you have to do is take the first step and admit you've got issues and BOY do you have issues. Your friends here at Freerepublic are ready to give you an intervention. Dont you see what youre doing to your imaginary family and friends?
I've always wondered about people who like to argue for arguments sake. I realize you think you're showing off your great mental acuity and debating skills but really, it's so sad and pathetic.
As for cats, I love them. I don't let my cats out and don't appreciate people who do. However, if one of my cats were to ever get out and someone blasted em, unless they were attacking them or their animals, there's be a problem. I'd debate them to death.
Rush has lost his mind over this. Said it was a slippery slope. Next people will be breaking in and killing your canary. I kid you not.
OK, these cat threads have been going on and on but I have a solution:
Bring in jillions of alligators to eat the cats.
Now since we are overrun with alligators we need to bring in a jillion elephants to stomp the alligators.
Too many elephants, bring in tons and tons of mice to scare off the elephants.
Too many mice, bring in a zillion cats to eat the mice.
Simple, amazed it hasnt been thought of before,
You need a law to say you can shoot cats? Whats next, deer?
Thats all a bunch of talk, blast away America!
"You deer to kill the King's dare?"
