My Norton is driving me nuts
April 14, 2005 | pbrown

I've had to uninstall and then reinstall my Norton Internet Security 2004, a total of four times in the last two weeks. I am at my wits end, which for me, isn't too far a journey. Any help on what could possibly be wrong would be greatly appreciated.

Have you by any chance downloaded the Microsoft Service pack 2? If you have that is probably your problem. It is not compatible with Norton's Firewall.

Both firewalls can't be ran simultaneously. If SP2 is installed, go to your Control Panel, open "Windows Firewall" and choose "Off (Not Recommended)".

This should give NIS the field.

Hope it helps.

AVG is free as long as you don't want tech support. I've used it for nearly three years. Works great.

Norton's best feature is the uninstall function.

Well, not quite. Norton is so bloated that, depending on which version, they actually have a few uninstallers for their messy uninstall.

I had a very similar problem. I finally took mine to a shop and was told that spyware/adware had taken over. The tech then cleaned my hard drive, (getting rid of my Norton), installed AVG .... all for $40.00. My computer works better than ever! Also, I have added Webroot Spy Sweeper.

Good luck!

I don't like Mcafee at all - I only used it a few months and I couldn't stand it.

My live update is running in the background...again.

I believe my Live Update runs in the background all the time too. If I'm right, and I'm not on my home machine to check, but I believe the process runs as a Service, meaning it starts when you start the computer. What's the process name?

Did you just install SP2 for XP? Known problems with some Symantec products.

LOL I figured it was Lucas related problems.

Didya hear Norton is making a comeback? Pretty nice looking scoot...we'll see if they actually can survive longer than other resurrected brands (like Indian).

I don't know what's happened to Symantec but their home computer products suck.

Symantec Client Security for Enterprises and their Security Appliances like the sgs 5400 series are awesome but I won't touch their home computer products.

Grab another anti-viral package like Mcafee or others

McAfee was the worst $60 I ever spent on a computer, and I did that last year. Used it on my kids machine and I was never able to get it to "auto-update" in the background. I had to ALWAYS tell it to download updated virus files even. PITA.

Additionally, McAfee does not identify or protect from Malware.

What version are you using and with which operating system?  I am still using 4.5 after uninstalling 5.0.  Have heard 5.5 has not worked all that well for some folks.

I'm using Windows 2000 Pro.

Thanks for the info.

So you just go to their site and download?

Norton provides no tech support unless you pay for it.

Something else. I've noticed of late that my monitor goes off after my computer boots up. The monitor is fine, but when I go to control panel, display and to settings and then tinker with the pixels the display stays on.

This is driving me crazy. I've called Compaq and they have no clue what's going on. I'm thinking I have some virus but virus scans are clear.

The computer is still under warranty.

Sound like something you've seen before?

nick
