Dump your Norton. I had the same problem. A friend that works on computers says he sees this all the time. As soon as I unloaded it - including clearing the registry - my computer went back to working.

I will do that tonight. I kant's take no more...

Norton Security blocks URLs with the word "advertising" in them.

It's even worse than that. It also blocks images with "advertising" or "ad" in the file name. This is a piece of crap software sold by a piece of crap company.

I would like to thank each and every one of you, even you lurkers, for all you help. You don't know how much I appreciate all your advice and tips. I will leave now and put on my surgical gloves and have at it. Hopefully, I'll be back. Once again, thank you all. Good night.

The Scotsman.

In view of the fact you had this joke at top of brain you must have been hysterical at seeing the threadline and then telling it. I'll never think of Norton the same.

Sorry about the link requiring registration. Here's a part of the text:

When viruses come out to play
By Charles Wright
November 18, 2004
LiveWire

We always know when it's autumn in the northern hemisphere because that's when Bleeding Edge starts to hear from the anti-virus industry.

This is the season - perhaps it's got something to do with all those falling leaves - when they come out with new versions of their software.

Being spring here, however, we managed to summon up some energy and survey the field.

For most users, that survey begins and ends with Norton Anti-Virus, still by far the industry leader.

On paper, Norton Internet Security 2005 looks promising enough. The latest version of the anti-virus application has been updated to cope with "blended threats", in which viruses are attached to spam emails, as was the case with the Sasser and Blaster worms.

The package has new features, such as an outbreak alert that's probably best taken with blood-pressure medication, along with protection against fraudulent web addresses and email "spoofing".

But we've stopped recommending Norton for a number of reasons. The first is that this is one area where the principle of safety in numbers does not apply.

fact that Symantec, which produces the Norton line, is the industry leader means that virus writers put a lot of work into attacking its software. . . .

Say amen, brother. Thou doest speak the truth. I would like to smite their server with lightning.

One last question: should I disconnect my phone line before starting or leave it connected?

I use VCOM Fix It Utilities. It fixes everything and it has one of the best anti-virus programs I have seen. It updates instantly whenever a new virus is discovered. I've never had a problem since I installed it. $29,99 at Best Buy. Probably Cheaper elsewhere.

Right on about AVG for antivirus support. It works well, keeps itself updated, and the price is right! Also, ditto the Norton Sucks!

WOW, for nearly thirty thousand, I hope I can find it cheaper...I'm kidding. I know it's a typo. Thanks. Night.

At Steve Gibson's site there is link for unbinding your network - it is linked way more places than you need it to be.

If you don't understand that, no problem. Neither did I. I just followed his steps and it makes your computer a whole lot more secure.

That's what your computer looks like now.

Here is what you need. Closes the door on many compromises.

Gibson moved his pages around a bit so I am not exactly sure where it is from his site at grc.com. But we have a direct link to it at GoGov.com

You can find it here Network Bindings Patch

Unfortunately it doesn't fix your punctuation. But it does fix just about everything else.

I keep FreeRepublic and RushLimbaugh and dump the rest.

And .. cookies take up a lot of room on your system - that's why it's so important to get rid of them on a regular basis.

I'm not employed by Norton - sorry for bursting your bubble.

You don't like Norton - WHOOPIEEE .. I don't care. But to diss me because I do .. is just stupid and juvenile.
