Arizona Law Offers Gun-Safety Elective to High School Students By Melanie Hunter CNSNews.com Deputy Managing Editor April 15, 2005
(CNSNews.com) - An Arizona bill designed to teach gun safety to children has been signed into law by Gov. Janet Napolitano.
Arizona State Senate Bill 1271 was unanimously approved by the state Senate and passed the state House by a three-to-one margin.
The law requires high schools to offer a gun-safety class as an elective, giving students credit toward a high school diploma. A "shoot safely" requirement was included in the bill as a statutory rule to prevent gun control advocates from changing it.
The bill also required that the course include instruction in the role of firearms in preserving peace and freedom, the constitutional roots of the right to keep and bear arms, the history of firearms and marksmanship, the basic operation of firearms, and practice time at a shooting range, to name a few.
The law began as an idea and rough draft from Bloomfield Press publisher Alan Korwin. Bloomfield Press is the largest publisher of gun law books in the country and was founded in 1989.
Good law.

Do the students get to purchase firearms for school they way that school band members can buy instruments? I can see a student saying to his/her parents, "Mom, dad I need to get an AK-47 for school" or "If I don't buy ammo this weekend, I'll get an F." :-)
I am very much in favour of this law. The kids will learn responsibility, patience, a useful skill, and one of the foundations of our liberty.

It sounds good. But who teaches the class? Do you really want some lefty teacher teaching this class?
This is a good idea. Of course back in the fifties the better high schools had rifle teams. These were schools like Shaker Heights in Cleveland and Williamsville in Buffalo, where 95% of their graduates went to college, most of them to the ivy league schools.
This is Arizona.
You can bet your sweet bippy we have enough NRA-qualified instructors, many of them already in the High Schools, to teach the course.

We've had these classes in high schools in Nevada as long as I can remember.

Where are they going to find a lefty to teach the shooting part? However it looks like the statutory curriculum requirements are sufficient to ensure that the kids will at least get a bare notion that it the "right of the people", and the purpose of protecting that right.
