Improving diet and physical activity: 12 lessons from controlling tobacco smoking
British Medical Journal ^ | 4/16/05 | Derek Yach, Martin McKee, Alan D

On behalf of Oxford Vision 2020, a partnership dedicated to preventing the forecast worldwide growth of chronic diseases, the authors suggest that 12 lessons learnt from attempts to control tobacco smoking could be used to tackle the chronic disease epidemics evolving from unhealthy diets and a lack of physical activity

Introduction

This year three new books have been published about the progress made globally in research, policy, and actions to control tobacco smoking. In addition, Sir Richard Doll reported this year on 50 years of following British doctors to document the impact of smoking on their health.4 We have reviewed the evidence and approaches taken to control tobacco smoking, well described in these new texts, because of the rapid global increase in the risk factors of unhealthy diets and lack of physical activity. As part of the Oxford Vision 2020 process,5 we have proposed 12 lessons from tobacco control that might speed up progress in tackling these new public health threats. We also drew on other recent insights from tobacco control in addressing other chronic disease risks.

Trying to play oneupmanship on me there, sis????

Just kidding - as you well know.

My fingers are crossed that the forecast holds and there will be no frost tonight so I can get into the garden tomorrow morning.

I've got a meeting tomorrow night and so I really need to get out ther during the day. Regardless, I know we'll talk tomorrow - it seems we always find each other on Monday........and Tuesday...and Wednesday.........etc.

Oh heck - you know what I mean!!!

Total State control through the military, the prisons, the schools, and the hospitals ought to make a dent in this huge problem.

Whenever I post about my diet and exercise regimen to others, no matter how tactfully I put it, I still get labeled as one of them nanny government do-gooders who thinks I'm superior to everybody else.

I'm pouting because that is just not fair - I love reading your posts explaining what you have done and I have never labeled you as a nanny government type - in fact I rely on you to prove my point that the nanny government is not only unnecessary - but also dangerous.

But just because we conservatives want to fight the big-government nannies (as we should), it doesn't mean that we have to necessarily adopt a harmful lifestyle just for spite.

I could not agree with you more. Unfortunately there are far too many so--called "conservatives" that are willing to accept the big-government nannies to take care of them when it comes to their pet peeves.

That is what I am trying to fight.

Thank you, my FRiend - I don't know how else to say it.............but it needs to be said and said often.

We must stop fighting amongst ourselves when it comes to the nanny staters.

Thanks for your post. I totally understand where you are coming from. While I am happy to tell my story of how I overcame my obesity in the hopes that others will follow my example, I would be horrified to be associated with any attempt to get government or nannies involved. I am a firm believer in personal responsibility and the government can just butt out.

I agree that some so-called conservatives make our entire movement look foolish when they make allowances for big-government nannies to intervene on behalf of their own pet peeves. Case in point is the FCC and Howard Stern. Or the silly campaign launched by Tipper Gore to put labels on recordings that contain profanity (which no doubt boosted record sales for many undeserving recording artists).

You're welcome, and thanks for stating it so plainly. You are quite right that it needs to be repeated, and often. :)

I love your story and think you should shout it from the rafters!! I really do.

But what I love more is your stance against the nanny statists.

As I have been saying all through this thread - those of us who have made different life choices can and should work together to keep the big government nanny-staters out of all of our lives. It appears that you and I agree there.

We should not be fighting publicly amongst ourselves over our own personal pet peeves - it becomes self defeating because that is exactly what the nanny-staters are looking to do.......divide and conquer. What pains me so is that even here at FreRepublic I see them succeeding everyday.

I'm going to finish up on reading through this thread and then call it a night - I always enjoy "speaking" with you. Have a pleasant evening/night/morning!!!!!!

The Oxford Vision 2020 movement aims to define innovative pathways for action which will prevent the forecast massive growth in these diseases and the consequent deaths.

Sometimes I think these people actually want confrontation and consciously act as provocateurs. What else can account for this audacity, this hubris?

I think stuff like these attacks will open more people's eyes, if it ever makes it into the mainstream. How much more are people everywhere going to take?

There you go again with the insult followed by the smilie face. The point of my post was to point out to you that posting a smilie face doesn't make up for rude words.
