"Can somebody who is a Catholic help this poor heathen to understand what images of Mary are supposed to represent?" The non-superstitious who haven't been "baptized into" what you've been indoctrinated by dictators to believe is anathamatized as a heathen and on the way to hell, huh? LOL
BTW - If the RCC cannot affirm the authority of Scripture apart from the caveat that tradition is necessary to explain the Bible's true meaning, can you explain how that does NOT make tradition a superior authority to Scripture?
And since the RCC claims infallibility for itself, can you explain how that doesn't make the Scriptures ultimately irrelevant?

Re: Our Lady of the Underpass? (Virgin Mary Image Near Chicago Highway)-
"I find it interesting that one of these images appeared on an office building in Clearwater, FL, ten miles from Terri Schiavo's hospice. Now there's one in Chicago where a man is starving to death his thirty something year old wife who had a stroke. Do you think it could be a wake up call?" And what if "Our Lady of the Underpants" is the headline regarding the location of the next appearance?

"She sure is popping up everywhere these days..." How do you recognize her? By her hood and long flowing garments, her face, or because you just "feel it in your bones"? LOL

Thanks, you said it much better.

Well, 999 times out of 1000, if you see these "Virgin Mary apparitions", the Catholics venerating it initially were not Poles, Italians, or French Catholics. They're Hispanics, and since this Guadalupe thing that sucked so many of them into the church of their conquistadors, they're always looking for some divine prescense in ordinary everyday things.
It's not unlike pagans or wiccans who venerate trees and this sort of thing, there are just very highly superstitious people who want Stuff to worship, and cannot deal with religion as solely a philosophy or a mental construct.

It reminds me a lot of a painting of Napoleon with a high collar.
Not all these images are Mary.

This is not a theological thread. Rest assured there are folks here who are NOT Mariologists who can provide a pretty good argument that she's a bit special anyway ~ e.g. her coming was prophesied.
Not too many folks in that category, eh?~ Certainly not you or I FUR SHUR.

Just fyi, this was spray painted over last night by a man on a bicycle. He painted "Big Lie" and a swastika over it, then a city crew came in and painted over everything. It's all gone now.
Local news sites don't have a story up yet, or I would've posted a link and a new thread. My source is WLS-AM.
