Operation Majestic-12 was established by special classified presidential order on September 24, 1947 at the recommendation of Secretary of Defense James Forrestal and Dr. Vannevar Bush, Chairman of the Joint Research and Development Board. The goal of the group was to exploit everything they could from recovered alien technology.
Buried in a super-secret "MAJIC EYES ONLY" classification that was above TOP SECRET — long before the modern top secret codeword special access programs of today — Major General Leslie R. Groves (who commanded the Manhattan Project to deliver the atomic bomb) kept just one copy of the details of crashed alien technology in his safe in Washington, D.C.
Ambitious, elite scientists such as Vannevar Bush, Albert Einstein, and Robert Oppenheimer, and career military people such as Hoyt Vandenberg, Roscoe Hillenkoetter, Leslie Groves, and George Marshall, along with a select cast of other experts, feverishly and secretively labored to understand the alien agenda, technology, and their implications.
Einstein and Oppenheimer were called in to give their opinion, drafting a six-page paper titled “Relationships With Inhabitants Of Celestial Bodies.” They provided prophetic insight into our modern nuclear strategies and satellites, and expressed agitated urgency that an agreement be reached with the President so that scientists could proceed to study the alien technology.
The extraordinary recovery of fallen airborne objects in the state of New Mexico, between July 4 – July 6, 1947, caused the Chief of Staff of the Army Air Force’s Interplanetary Phenomena Unit, Scientific and Technical Branch, Counterintelligence Directorate to initiate a thorough investigation. The special unit was formed in 1942 in response to two crashes in the Los Angeles area in late February 1942. The draft summary report begins “At 2332 MST, 3 July 47, radar stations in east Texas and White Sands Proving Ground, N.M. tracked two unidentified aircraft until they both dropped off radar. Two crash sites have been located close to the WSPG. Site LZ-1 was located at a ranch near Corona, Approx. 75 miles northwest of the town of Roswell. Site LZ-2 was located approx. 20 miles southeast of the town of Socorro, at latitude 33-40-31 and longitude 106-28-29”.
The first-ever-known UFO crash retrieval case occurred in 1941 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. This crash kicked off early reverse-engineering work, but it did not create a unified intelligence effort to exploit possible technological gains apart from the Manhattan Project uses.
The debris from the primary field of the 1947 crash 20 miles southeast of Socorro, New Mexico was called ULAT-1 (Unidentified Lenticular Aerodyne Technology), and it excited metallurgists with its unheard-of tensile and shear strengths. The fusion nuclear (called neutronic at that time) engine used heavy water and deuterium with an oddly arranged series of coils, magnets, and electrodes — descriptions that resemble the “cold fusion” studies of today.
Harry Truman kept the technical briefing documents of September 24, 1947 for further study, pondering the challenges of creating and funding a secret organization before the CIA existed (although the Central Intelligence Group or CIG did exist) and before there was a legal procedure of funding non-war operations.
In April 1954, a group of senior officers of the U.S. intelligence community and the Armed Forces gathered for one of the most secret and sensational briefings in history. The subject was Unidentified Flying Objects — not just a discussion of sightings, but how to recover crashed UFOs, where to ship the parts, and how to deal with the occupants. For example, in the “Special Operations Manual (SOM1-01) Extraterrestrial Entities Technology Recovery and Disposal,” MAJESTIC–12 “red teams” mapped out UFO crash retrieval scenarios with special attention given to press blackouts, body packaging, and live alien transport, isolation, and custody.

On 24 June, 1947, a civilian pilot flying over the Cascade Mountains in the State of Washington observed nine flying disc-shaped aircraft travelling in formation at a high rate of speed. Although this was not the first known sighting of such objects, it was the first to gain widespread attention in the public media. Hundreds of reports of sightings of similar objects followed. Many of these came from highly credible military and civilian sources. These reports resulted in independent efforts by several different elements of the military to ascertain the nature and purpose of these objects in the interests of national defense. A number of witnesses were interviewed and there were several unsuccessful attempts to utilize aircraft in efforts to pursue reported discs in flight. Public reaction bordered on near hysteria at times. In spite of these efforts, little of substance was learned about the objects until a local rancher reported that one had crashed in a remote region of New Mexico located approximately seventy-five miles northwest of Roswell Army Air Base (now Walker Field). On 07 July, 1947, a secret operation was begun to assure recovery of the wreckage of this object for scientific study. During the course of this operation, aerial reconnaissance discovered that four small human-like beings had apparently ejected from the craft at some point before it exploded. These had fallen to earth about two miles east of the wreck-age site. All four were dead and badly decomposed due to action by predators and exposure to the elements during the approximately one week time period which had elapsed before their discovery. A special scientific team took charge of removing these bodies for study. (See attachment "C".) The wreckage of the craft was also removed to several different locations.(See Attachment "B".) Civilian and military witnesses in the area were debriefed, and news reporters were given the effective cover story that the object had been a misguided weather research balloon. A covert analytical effort organized by Gen. Twining and Dr. Bush acting on the direct orders of the President, resulted in a preliminary concensus (19 September, 1947) that the disc was most likely a short range reconnaissance craft. This conclusion was based for the most part on the craft's size and the apparent lack of any identifiable provisioning. (See Attachment "D".) A similar analysis of the four dead occupants was arranged by Dr. B Ronk. It was the tentative conclusions of this group (30 November, 1947) that although these creatures are human-like in appearance, the biological and evolutionary processes responsible for their development has apparently been quite different from those observed or postulated in homo sapiens. Dr. Bronk's team has suggested the term "Extra-terrestrial Biological Entities", or "EBE's", be adopted as the standard term of reference for these creatures until such time as a more definitive designation can be agreed upon. Since it is virtually certain that these craft do not originate in any country on earth, considerable speculation has centered around what their point of origin might be and how they get here. Mars was and remains a possibility, although some scientists, most notably Dr. Menzel, consider it more likely that we are dealing with beings from another solar system entirely. Numerous examples of what appear to be a form of writing were found in the wreckage. Efforts to decipher these have remained largely unsuccessful. (See Attachment "E".) Equally unsuccessful have been efforts to determine the method of propulsion or the nature or method of transmission of the power source involved. Research along these lines has been complicated by the complete absence of identifiable wings, propellers, jets, or other conventional methods of propulsion and guidance, as well as a total lack of metallic wiring, vacuum tubes, or similar recognizable electronic components. (See Attachment "F".) It is assumed that the propulsion unit was completely destroyed by the explosion which caused the crash. A need for as much additional information as possible about these craft, their performance characteristics and their purpose led to the undertaking known as U. S. Air Force Project SIGN in December, 1947. In order to preserve security, liaison between SIGN and Majestic-12 was limited to two individuals within the Intelligence Division of Air Material Command whose role was to pass along certain types of information through channels. SIGN evolved into Project GRUDGE in December, 1948. The operation is currently being conducted under the code name BLUE BOOK, with liaison maintained through the Air Force officer who is head of the project. On 06 December, 1950, a second object, probably of similar origin, impacted the earth at high speed in the El Indio - Guerrero area of the Texas - Mexican border after following a long trajectory through the atmosphere. By the time a search team arrived, what remained of the object had been almost totally incinerated. Such material as could be recovered was transported to the A. E. C. facility at Sandia, New Mexico, for study. Implications for the National Security are of continuing importance in that the motives and ultimate intentions of these visitors remain completely unknown. In addition, a significant upsurge in the surveillance activity of these craft beginning in May and continuing through the autumn of this year has caused considerable concern that new developments may be imminent. The document was located in Record Group 341, entry 267. The series is filed by a Top Secret register number. This document does not bear such a number. 2. The document is in the folder T4-1846. There are no other documents in the folder regarding "NSC/MJ-12". 3. The Military Reference Branch (Edward Reese) has conducted a search in the records of the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Headquarters US Air Force, and in other related files. No further information has been found on this subject. 4. Inquiries to the US Air Force, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the National Security Council failed to produce further information. 5. The Acting Director of the Freedom of Information Office of the National Security Council informed us that "Top Secret Restricted Information" is a marking which did not come into use at the National Security Council until the Nixon Administration. The Eisenhower Presidential Library also confirms that this particular marking was not used during the Eisenhower Administration. 6. The document in question does not bear an official government letterhead or watermark. The NARA conservation specialist (Mary Ritzenthaler) examined the paper and determined it was a ribbon copy prepared on "dictation onionskin". The Eisenhower Library has examined its collection of the Cutler papers. All documents created by Mr. Cutler while he served on the NSC staff have an eagle watermark in the onionskin carbon paper. Most documents sent out by the NSC were prepared on White House letterhead paper. For the brief period when Mr. Cutler left the NSC, his carbon copies were prepared on "prestige onionskin". 7. The Judicial, Fiscal, and Social Branch searched the Official Meeting Minute Files of the National Security Council and found no record of a NSC meeting on July 16, 1954. A search of all NSC Meeting Minutes fro July 1954 found no mention of MJ- 12 nor Majestic. 8. The Judicial, Fiscal and Social Branch (Mary Ronan) searched the indices [sic] of the NSC records and found no listing for: MJ-12, Majestic, unidentified flying objects, UFO, flying saucers, or flying discs. 9. The Judicial, Fiscal, and Social Branch (Mary Ronan) found a memo in a folder titled "Special Meeting July 16, 1954" which indicated that NSC members would be called to a civil defense exercise on July 16, 1954. 10. The Eisenhower Library states, in a letter to NNMR, dated July 16, 1987: "President Eisenhower's Appointment Books contain no entry for a special meeting on July 16, 1954 which might have included a briefing on MJ-12. Even when the President had `off the record' meetings, the Appointment Books contain entries indicating the time of the meeting and the participants.... The Declassification Office of the National Security Council has informed us that it has no record of any declassification action having been taken on this memorandum or any other documents on this alleged project.... Utterly ridiculous, IMO. Anyone that may have had access to all these documents would have had to have had a BBR -- Burn Before Reading -- security clearance, and those are extremely hard to come by.
The trouble with all this is that it's so badly imagined. I write science fiction professionally, and I can come up with a much better scenario for alien observation of the Earth than just cruising around at low altitude taking snapshots.
If there are aliens watching us, their probes are small, disguised as birds or bugs, or else are up in orbit. They wouldn't act like artillery spotting planes.
Moreover, if this has been known since 1947, why keep it a secret? Wouldn't the US boast about its access to superior alien technology, especially in the depths of the Cold War? What's the _point_?
I can find records giving the exact location of every US nuclear weapon in 1947. Secrets get old and eventually stop being secret. Can anyone really believe that this would have remained hidden under blabbermouth administrations like Carter and Clinton?

I've said it before, and I'll now say it again: The studied consideration of UFO's, whatever they may be in any given case, is a conservative issue. Notice I say "studied" - I mean logical, reasoned thought on the matter, not the true tinfoil "baby-eating-alien-lizards" stuff.

I spent most of the years 1989-1991 researching the whole UFO thing. My conclusion is that 99% of it is sheer bunkum -- but that the remaining 1% is very interesting indeed. I came away doubtful that ETs exist, but almost certain that the U.S. government is sitting on some kind of Big Secret -- if not the existence of ETs, then something even more esoteric and weird. I'd pay a pretty penny to know what the Big Secret is.

I was scheduled to get one of those, but they burned it before I got it.
I will say the one thing that freaks me out a little about the Roswell story is that, one of the older tales from the "eyewitnesses" at Roswell, was they found metal that was like "tin foil" (insert joke here), however when you folded it up or crushed it; the metal would resume its shape with no creases and it couldn't really be scratched. Well in the last few years science has created Nano-tubulars, I believe they are called, and other nano-tech according to the reports it will created very thin sheets of metal like tin foil, which would keep its shape after use.
We've also developed "memory-metal" that has similar properties. Truth is stranger than fiction.

Why is it absurb to believe that we are the only life in the universe that is capable of space travel? It makes perfect sense to believe this. After all, we are the only life form that is capable of space travel on this planet (out of thousands and thousands of species). What is the chance that this could happen anywhere else? I'd say about zero.
What I find most interesting about these claims is that no one seems to be saying that today, there are craft(s) that are crashing into our planet. Why is that?
50 years ago, apparently there were a lot of crashes, but now they have suddenly stopped?
50 years ago these "alien beings" were advanced enough, technologically speaking, to traverse the great distances between solar systems, but couldn't build a craft that wouldn't crash?
And now they can? Does it make sense to believe that the greatest technological achievement these aliens have made in the last 50 years is the ability to do what a commercial jet liner can do?
I suppose one might answer by saying, "Well, we just don't hear about the crashes today. 50 years from now, we'll probably hear about the ones today".
*shrug* Ok!
Still begs the question above: They (the aliens) can build some kind of spaceship that can travel between solar systems, possibly galaxies, but have trouble staying aloft in a planet's atmosphere?
(Note: This doesn't mean that when I get home, I won't be turning out all the lights, cracking open a beer and reading all these documents. hehe I DO love a good conspiracy theory :-) )
