But should not our spirit (soul) prevail over our passions since our soul is in God's image?
If Adam and Eve had not eaten the fruit of the tree of knowledge, then yes. But, our fallen nature means that we lean toward evil and effort is required to overcome evil. God has given us free will and intellect to choose Him (follow His will) or to reject Him (follow our passions/will).
