Black women must fix behavior or risk death from AIDS
JWR ^ | 4-25-05 | Rochelle Riley

Dr. Gail Wyatt has a message for black women: We need to change our views and actions regarding sexuality.

Or die.

Nearly three-quarters of America's new cases of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, are African-American women. Black women between 25 and 44 are 13 times more likely to die of the disease than white women of the same age.

It is one of the most underreported news stories of this new decade, and sadly, more women will die before we pay attention.

Black women and their sexuality are the focus of Wyatt's research since she conducted the first study of black women's sexuality in 1980. A professor and associate director of the AIDS Institute at the University of California at Los Angeles, she included 4,000-5,000 women ages 18-80 in her research for "Stolen Women: Reclaiming Our Sexuality, Taking Back Our Lives" (Wiley, $12.95).

She concluded that black women are too easily influenced by what others think of us and depreciate ourselves based on those opinions.

"There isn't any group in the world that has experienced what we have, over 400 years of the kind of slavery we experienced, isolated in language, physical contact and relationships developed at the whim of someone else."

Wyatt says many black women have no healthy perspective to use to model relationships.

"Since we've failed to address the problem, we go limping along, trying to walk but never having a chance to heal." Black women's sexuality "is looked upon by others as aberrant, hypersexual, irresponsible, spontaneous and at the risk of one's life, one's health and well-being. The irony of it is that ... we have women who are actually living their lives as a stereotype, and they don't even know it. ..."

I agree with your post. The article leaves out a lot but then again only so much that can be said in an article. I do think the 'war on poverty' was the beginning of the war on the black family though.

Some very non PC observations.

It seems that black male behavior is a far higher "at risk" behavior.

That black females pay the price for this behavior.

May black females are marrying "white" (including some close relatives).

Cause/effect - looking for a more safety/security?

Sorry, but the grossly pathological black culture has doomed these and many more black women to death from AIDS.

I don't see any remedy. Our sick PC society prevents anyone from telling the truth on these matters.

Very very interesting... I've been doing a lot of reaidng on AIDS tests and how many show up false and some people recommend anyone with a positive result should get retested.

Thank you for the information. However, the article cites a death rate among one demographic 13 times that for the corresponding group among white women. That is not a result of false positives on the HIV antibody test, unless they are coupled which a cause of death other than AIDS but consistent with AIDS--a circumstance I suspect is vanishingly small, given the very low incidence among non-HIV infected individuals of things like Kaposi's sarcoma and the opportunistic pneumonias that kill most AIDS victims.

I can tell you that's not the predominant mentality though

I live in a predominantly anglo/latino community and I can tell you it isn't the prevailing mentality here either....

Yes and I agree especially whenever I go into the city and see the wreck amongst the metrosexual set with crystal meth.

but most people take their behavioral cues from 1)parents and 2)the world around them

Yep.

Because the author seems to be over emphasizing sexuality, leads me suspect that the author may be a lesbian.

The figure of 75% of the new cases seems suspect to me. Does anyone have any figures to back up this number. Perhaps it is right but I wonder. If it is right there has been a crime of silence of omission by the media. Those percentages if accurate are politically incorrect dynamite.

Thank you David. Yes, its not just diagnosis - being HIV positive correlates to grave illness and death.

We have to examine why this is. Correlation is not cause. There are two reasons why seropositivity (according to these otherwise worthless tests) really does correlate to morbidity.

Firstly they are serological tests. They test for blood protein. Given the number of cross reactions proteins have with each other, having more proteins in your blood means that serological tests will test positive on you more often.

When your body is in catabolic stress - e.g. from disease, malnutrition or trauma your blood proteins (by and large) go up. So you see that genuinely sick people will tend to trigger serological tests more often. The fact that you triggered a test thought to test for this HIV virus means that your disease is now associated with AIDs, wheras it is really TB, flu, drug toxicity etc.

Secondly - and more importantly - diagnosis with HIV is of itself a life-threatening condition.

90% of all AIDs patients in the US during the AZT era died of liver failure. 90% of them. As they were being given heavy doses of the extremely deadly toxic drug AZT when they died, it seems a bit far-fetched to assert that their liver failure was brought on by some as-yet-unisolated virus. Yet this is what we are being asked to believe

In the end the Concorde study proved that AZT was just killing people and curing no-one. That's when the US quietly stopped using AZT and switched to the protease inhibitor cocktails. These are dangerous drugs, but nowhere near as dangerous gram-for-gram as AZT. So the death rate from AIDs dramatically decreased. This was hailed as a miracle breakthrough - but in fact people were just being given less deadly poison.

Yeah, I saw a book in Borders a few months back, written by a black man, "celebrating" the downlow lifestyle. In fact, the NY Times Magazine did a huge article on this last year and how black men only equate effeminate behavior as being gay, not the actions associated with homosexuality! Incredible stupidity on their part is spreading AIDS to their straight women.

I think I know which book you're talking about. If it's the same guy, he was on the panel at the 'State of the Black Union'. Annoying and excuse making!

very low incidence among non-HIV infected individuals of things like Kaposi's sarcoma and the opportunistic pneumonias that kill most AIDS victims.

This is an interesting point you raise. Kaposi's Sarcoma is no longer considered an AIDs disease by the CDC, whereas it was THE defining AIDs disease in the 1980s

In the early cases of AIDs (GRID = Gay Related Immune Disease) there was an obvious toxic cause for Kaposi's: the inhaling of amyl nitrite. This is a very lethal habit, and a demarcated homosexual phenomenum.(There's a reason for this, but let's not go there).

But the vast majority of AIDs deaths were not and are not caused by nitrite poppers. Hardly. Popper-related KS merely started the AIDs furore. Nowadays the classic popper-induced disease (Kaposi's Sarcoma, a dangerous cancerous lesion in the lungs) is no even longer defined as an AIDs disease - as the gay community drastically cut back on popper consumption in the early AIDs era. (However nitrite consumption is growing back again. In five years I predict that KS will be back on the CDC's list of AIDs diseases.)

The real killer in AIDs (the real toxic cause) was and is iatrogenic poisoning: by which I mean the treatment for HIV infection itself causes the disease. AZT - the old wonder drug for AIDS - is an extremely toxic chemotherapy drug: 1000 mg of AZT a day for months or years would kill an elephant. 90% of all those thousands of AIDs deaths in the AZT days were due to liver failure, not to an AIDs-defining disease.

That would be On the Down Low: A Journey Into the Lives of "Straight" Black Men Who Sleep with Men by J.L. King.

No, I haven't read it, but I did note that the guy was on Oprah awhile back, and of course Oprah gushed and fawned all over the author...
