Woman finds relief from fibromyalgia
News 14 Carolina ^ | 4/27/2005 8:39 AM | Catherine Steele

It's been described as "the worst flu you ever had" and pain that never goes away. Fibromyalgia affects some 3 million to 6 million Americans -- primarily women.

Many struggle just to convince their doctor of their pain because symptoms are varied and no test can diagnose it. One woman finally found an answer herself.

(snip)

Darlene discovered the key to her relief was in the foods she ate and those she eliminated. The trigger seemed to be a substance called excitotoxins. It's found in monosodium glutamate, high fructose corn syrup, even vegetables high in glutamate.

Without it, Darlene is like a new person.

(snip)

Eliminating MSG and aspartame can be tough to do. Many processed foods contain these items and the consumer may be unaware since they can be listed as other ingredients.

According to Truth in Labeling Campaign, the following substances always contain MSG:

autolyzed yeast, calcium caseinate, gelatin, glutamate, glutamic acid, hydrolyzed protein, monopotassium glutamate, monosodium glutamate, sodium caseinate, textured protein, yeast extract , yeast food, and yeast nutrient.

I am posting this story because I have met several FReepers who suffer from chronic muscle pain of one sort or another.

Do your fellow FReepers a favor and please do not post links to Fibromyalgia Websites or any of those scam products. This is an FYI for fellow FReepers, and commercial spam posts will result in the thread being pulled.

I know someone who had to stop eating gluten. This sounds very similar. She lost weight, feels a million times better.

Adkins has been helping me too- Snack all day long on meat and nothing else- and I lost 20 pounds so far.

This article title is SO " a new disorder."
It could use a better title, it seems like she simply had food allergies.
We all have food allergies of some sort or another. It would be simpler to name under Food allergies. :)

Would this help with any auto-immune disease?
How about Lupus?

Well they can test for the gluten disease, just doesn't happen often. My best friend lived with this for about 3 years before he finally went to the Dr and even then it took 6 months for them to try everything, and run the gluten disease test in desperation.

I'm interested in Atkins, what type of snacks do you eat? I need ideas for things to take to work.

I started taking harmless stomach bacteria powder for my fibromyaglia and it really helped. I could go outside in the cool/cold air without aching for a week afterwards after a week or two of taking the bacteria.

I think I had an over growth of yeast in my body due to too many antibiotics from the pneumonias I always seem to get. Though, to be fair, I was actually giving myself some of them because I hadn't caught onto the fact that non dairy creamers are mostly made out of corn syrup solids and that was causing asthma attacks and pneumonia for me.

That allergy to corn products also means I can't eat normal yogurt to get some of my stomach bacteria back since they usually put corn starch or corn syrup in the yogurt.

Eating yeasty products makes the yeast problem worse. Only replacing the stomach bacteria worked for me.

I don't think fibromyalgia is officially an autoimmune disease, but I'm not sure.

I love the Atkins protein bars during a busy work day, they seem to curb the afternoon "munchies" if you get them.

And then, there's the ol standby handful 'o roasted almonds or peanuts (unsalted) for that extra protein boost.

Works wonders for me!

Not that I know of any, but why?

A family member is about to try a product. If it's a
scam, I'd like to know (and I don't even know the
name of it).

Candida masks itself in many diseases. There are books you can buy (recipes, etc.) that can help. Not eating anything with sugar, vinegar, fruit, mushrooms, and anything that molds easily, helps a lot. You can add things back in as you get rid of the candida. There are also supplements. What did you take as bacteria powder and where did you get it? M

I bought some packaged sliced turkey breast and ham

I even open the packages in the fridge and spread them out to dry it a little bit.

A few slices of that as a snack and your hunger pangs go away- that is one of the biggest things I noticed about this diet- the urge to constantly snack has gone WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY down. That and you will pee like a racehorse for the first week or two as you drop a ton of water weight. (if you are doing it right - no cheating AT ALL!!)

I drink decaf coffe and milk and water. I use sugar so that has not mattered so far (to me) and fruit juices.

The only thing I make extra sure about is NO WHEAT (no noodles, bread, pizza...) and this seems a lot like th gluten free diet.
