CHICAGO (CBS 2) The State of Illinois is looking at a proposal that lets Mexican immigrants use their Mexican ID cards here. Many immigrants don't have driver’s licenses for Illinois, that makes it difficult to open a bank account and take care of other routine business. CBS 2's Rafael Romo reports on the major impact the little plastic cards can have.

Thanks! I talk to him regularly and he is a real warrior and does not get much support. Some how if we get activated here in Illinois to start protesting employers for hiring illegals I hope we can unite with Dave Gorak and get behind him, both financially and with elbow grease.

These "secure" matriculas were issued to Dave Gorak, MCRI's executive director at a cost of $130. The home address on the first was intentionally obscured.

In June 2003 the FBI told Congress that the matricula is an "unreliable form of identification. You can read the

My wife didn't have any problem opening a bank account. But then again, she had a passport and a GREEN CARD!

With emphasis on the phrase "USED TO BE". There has always been a Latin presence in Chicago, but it consisted of honest, English speaking people seeking citizenship. Between 1990 and 2000, the "Hispanic" population of Chicago more than doubled. You don't get that kind of population growth naturally. Chicago has way more illegal immigrants from Mexico than any other non-border state. It's a "sanctuary city"

And on the northwest side, they have one of the worst outbreaks of illegal immigration from Eastern Europe. No wonder Chicago imports so many illegal aliens, since both their white AND black "native born" population has gone DOWN decade after decade, yet the city's population keeps climbing due to massive illegal immigration.

Chicago today produces more Democrat votes (over 80% for Kerry) than old man Daley I (65% for Kennedy) could ever DREAM of.

Historically, the bipartisan combine of Illinois has made money of keeping things illegal... not by legalizing them. Cong Rosty controlled the patronage at the Social Security Office. The patronage paid for the privilege of having the job because they could make so much on the side. They sold social security cards, voters cards and had associates who sold drivers licenses. Of course, in addition to paying the price, the (illegal) immigrants had to vote the right way.

That was back in the '60's and '70's. Poles and Eastern Europeans.

Hate to disappoint you BB. But priot to 1990 many immigrant Poles did not seek citizenship. They retired to Poland. In the '70's and '80's social security checks from the USA were the number one import in Poland. Those social security checks financed the Solidarity movement.

Likewise with Mexican, Central American and even Cuban immigrants. For many years the Cubans clung the the dream of returning to Cuba and did not become citizens.

I personnally knew thousands of Hispanics. I had over 200 non-citizens at protests of urban removal in 1969. Similar with many other events.... plus being their landlord, etc. I taught citizenship classes. Relatively few were seeking citizenship.

Unlike the Poles who bought legit SS cards on which they could draw retirement checks, most Hispanics did not buy legit SS cards. They bought bogus SS cards. They had no intent to try to collect SS when they retired to Mexico. Where my wife is from in Mexico, Probably 90% of the men and 30% of the women had significant SS taken out of their paychecks while they worked in the US (with Chicago being the #1 work place for certain towns in Michoacan.) But relatively few try to collect SS.

True, the number of immigrants has increased in recent years. But there also is a better counting of how many are here. They were heavily undercounted pre 1990 and especially pre-1970. For example, the 1960 census probably counted fewer Mexidan immigrants in West Chicago than the number of them working at the Campbell Soup plant. The same is true of Marengo and Rochelle IL that had extremely large Mexican populations at that time.

One interesting quirk is that the census usually asks about "where you were on a day in April". There is always a large migration in March and April and exodus back to Mexico in November. Historically, the census workers have not been good at identifying the new March and April arrivals.

I've known thousands of illegal Mexicans. I've never known one who came in from Canada. Yes. It is easy to come in from Canada. Witness the terrorists and many European and Arab illegals who enter that way.

But it is so easy to come in directly from Mexico just walking accross the bridge, you'd have to be almost as stupid as the people crossing the desert to waste your time coming in thru Canada.

Just go to a border town. Rent a legit ID for $5 or $10 walk accross. Return the rented ID to the partner of the person you rented it from. Voila. You're in the US. That is how most illegals come in. Only the stupid cross the desert.
