Mexico criticizes renewed U.S. warning over border violence

Mexico said it was working to improve security in the border region but suggested the U.S. State Department had overreacted by renewing a warning to U.S. travelers about drug violence in northern Mexico.

As with the original travel advisory, the repeat warning on Tuesday angered Mexicans. The update blamed the continuing violence in Mexican border cities on turf battles between drug gangs but noted that was in part the result of Mexico's success in locking up cartel leaders.

"Imprecisions and generalizations that hurt the spirit of cooperation in law enforcement and the fight against organized crime should be avoided," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement that also promised to investigate crimes against Americans in the border region.

The U.S. announcement includes a new warning that U.S. citizens have been among the homicide victims.

The warning singles out the Mexican border town of Nuevo Laredo, across the Rio Grande from Laredo, Texas.

More than 30 U.S. citizens have been kidnapped or murdered in the past eight months in that city.

Daytime shootouts are not uncommon. And in one case, guns were fired on one of the Rio Grande bridges linking Nuevo Laredo to Texas.

In some cases assailants killed U.S. citizens near busy shopping areas and within blocks of those bridges.

Officials attribute the violence to a power struggle within the cartels after Mexican authorities arrested several leaders. Laredo is believed to have some of the most lucrative and established drug smuggling networks on the Mexico border.

Mexico's statement suggested the United States should help, rather than criticize.

"Mexico's government has traditionally maintained that combatting organized crime in the border region is a shared responsibility," the statement said.

How about this for a headline on the same story: US criticizes state of lawlessness in Mexico.

Mexico's statement suggested the United States should help, rather than criticize.

Oh, Mexico doesn't think we should criticize them if American citizens are being killed by Mexicans?

CLOSE THAT CORRUPT BORDER!!!!

"Mexico's government has traditionally maintained that combatting organized crime in the border region is a shared responsibility," the statement said."

How about the "shared responsibility \" of apprehending border violators?

I think we should re-enact 1848 for Senior Fox.

The warning should have been made months ago. Going over the border in some areas has been very dangerous for some time.

Why should we share responsiblity to clean up the mess of two or more Mexican drug cartels shooting it out!!!

That would be like us expecting Canada to share responsiblity of helping with the "rap" wars between the East coast rappers, and the West coast rappers....

Or the mafia family fights. We take care of our own "internal" wars, the Mexicans should take care of theirs!

It's ironic that travel advisories for Americans include places like Iraq, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, the Balkans, and, um....Mexico.

Mr. President... Put Up That Wall....

that is quite good. I have a feeling that immigration problems will be at the top of the list of issues in 08. The Reps need to get on the right side of this issue fast. We should build a 50 ft high wall (50 feet above and below the ground). The Socialist scum government of Mexico is out to destroy the southern US and repossess it over time.

As with the original travel advisory, the repeat warning on Tuesday angered Mexicans.

That rates a BFD.

"Imprecisions and generalizations that hurt the spirit of cooperation in law enforcement and the fight against organized crime should be avoided,"

Blah, blah, blah.

the Foreign Ministry ... also promised to investigate crimes against Americans in the border region.

Another BFD.

More than 30 U.S. citizens have been kidnapped or murdered in the past eight months in that city.

Rest easy, Mexico promises to "investigate".

In some cases assailants killed U.S. citizens near busy shopping areas and within blocks of those bridges.

That is also on Mexico's list of things to "investigate".

Mexico's statement suggested the United States should help, rather than criticize.

I'd like to suggest that the helping hand you are constantly looking for can be found on the end of your arm.

What has happenned to the outrage about US citizens being killed in a foreign country.

Doesn't this usually call for troops and retaliation when it is in the middle east or other places?

What does it take to require an official response?
