Annan says next UN chief should be Asian
Times of Oman ^ | 29/05/05

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, who retires next year, said Thursday the next chief of the world body should come from Asia.

The last UN Secretary General from Asia was U Thant who hailed from Myanmar -- then known as Burma -- and served as secretary general from 1961 to 1971.

"The secretary-general is elected on a rotational basis and next time it is Asia's turn," said Annan, who is from Ghana and whose stint as secretary general concludes at the end of 2006.

"I think a candidate has emerged from Thailand," Annan added.

Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart Sathirathai has declared his candidacy and has the backing of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Traditionally, the UNs top job rotates every 10 years by region.

Africa should have in theory handed over the post to Asia on January 1, 2002. But Annan was chosen for a second term in 2001, partly because Asia had difficulty agreeing on a candidate, giving Africa 15 years at the UN helm. –– AFP

I can think of worse things than seeing a Thai (even a globalist lefty one) taking the post. But that said, my experience with pro UN Thais has been that most of them are the antithesis of the sorts of people we partnered with during the SEATO era.

Commie China, perhaps? They would LOVE to have one of their "political officers" heading up the U.N. -- someone please flush the U.N. toilet and get these maggots out of our country!!

Actually it's time for the UN Sec Gen to be someone from the US and not a Clinton or a communist/socialist.

Here's a novel idea. How about the next UN chief being qualified and and honest. If he's not those things, then it wouldn't matter if he's African, Asian, European or Martian.

In an organization full of leftists, your suggestion does not compute.

"Content of their character"? Who cares.

An Asian? Sure. As long as he's from Taiwan.

First Black President of the U.S. & First Asian Secretary General of the U.N....
------
(chuckle) -- the world if full of criminals. They tend to ban together. The Clintons spent so much of our tax money for their personal pandering to despotic enemies of the U.S. -- all to plant favorable seeds for the future. The Clintons are not stupid (almost), they are just power-hungry sociopaths that seek political power anywhere they can find it, from anyone who will give it to them.
