Microsoft's Gates issues warning cry

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States should remove visa limits to allow more skilled foreign citizens to work at U.S. companies if it wants to remain a leader in technology, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates said Wednesday. Microsoft (Research) is having a hard time finding skilled workers within the United States, and the lack of H-1B visas for skilled workers is only making the situation worse, Gates said in a panel discussion at the Library of Congress. "The whole idea of the H-1B visa thing is, don't let too many smart people come into the country. The whole thing doesn't make sense," Gates said.

Translation - My stocks in a rut, I need more cheap / controllable labor to get it back up.

Microsoft has literally hundreds of open positions - not just developers, either. Why don't you apply for one so there's one less H-1B required?

If they paid more, the vacancies would probably be filled.

So much of Microsoft's work and production is already done offshore. IMHO, this is nothing but PANDERING TO WASHINGTON'S DISASTEROUS IMMIGRATION STANCE...just to keep political favor in Washington. That translates to favorable handling in anti-trust dealings, taxes, and support against foreign intrusion into MS's affairs and business.

LOL. A "warning cry" from Bill Gates. What would that sound like, a high-pitched, geeky yodel or what?

While increasing the number of H-1B visas is important, "we can't be so naive to believe that there is not a very serious border-security problem that we need to deal with," said California Republican Rep. David Dreier, who heads the House Rules Committee.

Ping!

Bravo Sierra.

Here, let's put that phrase through the old Language Analyzer and see what pops out.

Translation:
Microsoft (Research) is too cheap to pay the highly skilled engineers that can already be found in this country. Having found a cache of inexpensive labor elsewhere, they are whining for help from Uncle Sam to get the keys to the store.

Mr. Gates,
With your company's assets and security program,
you could well afford to establish a tech College
on your own MS Washington state campus! A TRAINING
school based on scholarship merit for budding
AMERICAN high school/college students! You provide millions of dollars to foreign aid, conservation
programs, political campaigns.
Why not a few bucks for a youth program?

Think about it.

I did read the story; but my take is that it IS about money.

My nephew interviewed with MSFT and they offered him a $160K/year job - but he would have to travel 100% of the time with zero notice and pretty much work 3000 hours/year (roughly $53 per hour)... you can get H1B's to do that easily, since they are in a different country with nothing else to do anyways.

What does MS currently pay?

At $9.00 an hour

The perks are unbelievable, though. At the MS Employee Store, everything Microsoft is sold at a huge discount. WinXP Pro is something like $25. Office Pro is about the same. Unfortunately, they prohibit employees from reselling the stuff to supplement their meager incomes.

See, we need more immigrants to do all those lowly jobs that Americans just don't want to do!
