A day in the life of President & Mrs. Bush (5/1/05): photos of the roast

PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: The President and First Lady attended Sunday morning church services at St. Johns, and were spending a quiet day at the White House.

TRANSCRIPT OF THE DAY: While I could not find an official transcript of the First Lady's remarks last night, I didi find the next best thing by cobbling together several news reports.

First Lady Laura Bush has stolen the show with a surprise comedy routine that teases her husband President George W Bush.

The performance at a dinner honouring award-winning journalists brought a standing ovation from the audience -- that included much of official Washington and a dash of Hollywood.

The president pretended to start a planned a speech last night at the 91st annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner, but was quickly "interrupted" by his wife in an obviously planned ploy. "Not that old joke, not again," she said to the delight of the audience. "I've been attending these dinners for years and just quietly sitting there. I've got a few things I want to say for a change."

GWB sat down and Laura proceeded to note that he is "usually in bed by now," and said she told him recently, "If you really want to end tyranny in the world you're going to have to stay up later." She outlined a typical evening: "Nine o'clock, Mr. Excitement here is sound asleep and I'm watching Desperate Housewives." Comedic pause. "With Lynne Cheney." Comedic pause. "Ladies and gentlemen, I am a desperate housewife."

The First Lady went on to quip that one night she went out to Chippendales, a male strip bar, with Lynne Cheney, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and top Bush aide Karen Hughes.

"I wouldn't even mention it, except (Supreme Court Justices) Ruth Ginsberg and Sandra Day O'Connor saw us there," she said. "I won't tell you what happened. But Lynne's secret service code name is now 'dollar bill'."

Laura Bush also joked about the president's mother Barbara Bush. "People think she's a sweet grandmotherly aunt Bea type. She's actually more like (fictional Mafia capo) Don Corleone."

She said that her husband actually knew little about ranching when they bought their ranch in Crawford, Texas.

"I'm proud of George. He's learned a lot about ranching since that first year, when he tried to milk the horse. What's worse, it was a male horse," she said.

The president now often spends time at the ranch clearing brush and cutting trails. "George's answer to any problem at the ranch is to cut it down with a chainsaw. Which I think is why he and Cheney and Rumsfeld get along so well."

That's good. My mom's computer desk doesn't have the best setup, at least for me. It probably works great for her, or I would assume so since she works at it every day.

My mom's usually pretty good about working but I have a completely different mentality so if I were really working at home and not just helping out, I'd probably get lazy. But my mom has a lot of different accounts so she couldn't work in an office even if she wanted to.

And again a very reasoned and well thought-out response, as usual, much, much better than the name-calling and total nastiness I've seen on threads today.

FR has changed a lot since I first started lurking, and unfortunately disagreement with another poster too often takes the nasty route. Much to my shame, I've done it myself.

One tends to respond to how one is spoken to, no one minds a reasoned argument but unfortunately so many people start out on the attack that even if there is a reasoned argument by the end of the article you are already ticked off so you respond with like.

Yeah, the whole world believes that Laura thinks her husband is boring, lazy, stupid and fake. And she so looks and acts like a desperate housewife, no doubt that is why her routine is taken for truth. A more miserable looking and acting wife would be hard to find. Poor Laura. Uh huh, riiight!

Mrs. Thatcher has always been my hero. I've often said that when I grow up I want to be just like her! That was back in the '80s (when I was in my 20-30s!) Still have not grown up - older, not UP. But I will always love her!

I had a little intake of breath on the Desperate Housewives comment, too. She probably wishes she hadn't said that one.

The other remarks didn't bother me at all, I thought they were all funny.

Yikes! I heard Laura Bush's entire monologue and there was nothing that I would call risque. Maybe I'm doomed! But there are plenty of other (more appropriate) things to worry about receiving divine retribution for.

The Desperate Housewives thing made me LOL, because it's so obviously far from the truth...

And I think she dispelled some of the shrinking violet image that a lot of media types like to paint her as.

You know how much I love you, Deb..........but I gotta disagree with you on this one.

She made mincemeat of the stupid leftist criticisms of her husband with her wit and charm.

Besides.......one of our bylaws is that we NEVER worry about what the stupid leftists will do or say to determine what should be done. Neither George nor Laura care what others will say, so why should we?

Laura's performance last night was a complete winner in my book......and all you have to do is look at these pics of him to see that the President agrees.

The one that I did the sharp intake was the Chippendale's the desperate housewives ones I put in the same category as the Bush twins sex and the city at the RNC jokes - a topical program that all can relate to.

The Chippendale's one to me was so out of character but now a day later I see it for what is was a swipe at the MSM.

Definitely agree. Somehow I think God is not too worried about Mrs. Bush's teasing remarks about her husband.

I do think some of them were slightly risque, however, which is partly why they were so funny! One just does NOT expect that from Lady Laura!

Thank you so much for those, snugs, you are constant wonder with the photos! Lynne's yearbook photo is indeed very nice. Do NOT tell me that is Dick Cheney in that photo with the white dinner jacket - very cute! I'm so glad that you and others adore him, I don't feel wierd (most of my friends - and husband - are liberals!).

I don't think so.

The humor was in the absurdity that she was saying that she is desperate, or that others could 'take George,' when everyone in the world (with a brain) knows it's not true.

IMO, that was one of the funniest moments.

Hello everyone! Hope you're all well.

THANKS, Wolfstar, for the pictures today! I was lucky enough to get home late, late last night, but catch the replay of Laura. I laughed out loud during most of it! It was a side of her I hadn't seen, but love! A little "adult", but that's what that's all about. GW obviously loved it, and she ended with a very touching tribute; almost seemed like she was near tears.

Check out the second picture--she's getting a 'pat'!
