Al-Qaeda tries to enter Angola 22/10/2004 12:07 - (SA)

Luanda - People or groups linked to the al-Qaeda terror network are trying to covertly enter the southern African nation of Angola, an official said on radio Thursday, adding that the government was on alert.

The Ecclesia radio station quoted Constantino Vitiaka, head of information at the national intelligence services, as saying that there was "an attempt by elements linked to al-Qaeda to come into Angola, especially through Moslem NGOs."

He said the government was keeping a close watch to see if terrorist groups were being formed, the Roman Catholic radio station reported.

Angola is emerging from a bitter 27-year civil war which ended in April 2002.

Would Al Qaeda be hoping to spread Marburg or something?

Why the hell would even Al-Qaeda want to go to that hell hole.

We can hope someone hasn't told them about the latest killer virus.

Angola is a major oil producer. Watch in the future for industry sabotage under cover of "religion" - making Saudi's and Iran's oil more valuable.

In case you didn't see this article, get out your tinfoil hats...

This article was written about the same time that Dr. Bonino, in Angola, Uige province, was noticing the unusual number of child deaths and wondering if there was a hemorrhagic fever present...

Cabinde has the sweet crude, while Uige has the diamonds, according to what I recall...

And the two provinces are not friendly...

Angola's oil regions are geographically outside Angola, one of those little geographic anomalies. They have had independence guerrilla movements.

Angola is important because our strategy is to maximize production outside the middle east, and African oil is a big part of that strategy. Which makes Angola important.

Angola doesn't have firm control over its territory, and neighboring Congo is tearing itself apart. Both of those facts makes the region an attractive one for Al Qaeda operatives. Lots of chaos to blend into.

Very interesting! I have been watching for similar stories. No more effective suicide bomber could be invented... or infected.

Thank you for the ping.

You're quite correct. The deaths began in September/October,according to published accounts.

Angola would be a very rich prize: gold, diamonds, yellowcake uranium-all kinds of mineral goodies. It also has one of the world's larger fields of "sweet" oil.

Off the top of my head, the population is about 75% Christian, and a very small % of Muslim. Most of the remainder are "animists" (meaning "We don't know what in hell they believe in !")

To al-Qaeda,that would make just about everybody fair game.

By the way, there was something on Interfax today about bioweapons.(The Russians getting CONCERNED ??

May 2 2005 3:21PM
Biological weapons are more dangerous than nuclear - expert
MOSCOW. May 2 (Interfax) - Biological weapons are more dangerous than nuclear and chemical weapons, biological security expert Natalia Kalinina said.

"When national security threats are ranked certain countries are ready to place biological weapons at the top, and chemical and nuclear weapons below," she told Interfax.

She said biological security issues are becoming especially pressing with the appearance of new genetically modified forms of biological weapons that international agreements do not cover.

"The principle of ranking seems quite logical. The fewer the verification methods and forms of protection, the higher the potential danger of unpunished use of some one type of weapon of mass destruction or other," she said.

In her opinion, the choice of biological agents for covert biological warfare or public use by terrorists is so great, that "the underestimation of the danger may have the gravest unpredictable economic, social and psychological consequences."

"Global biological terrorism can be used with the purpose of genocide, depriving whole countries and areas of sources of food and water," Kalinina said.

She said biological terrorism can be used for intimidation, provoking domestic unrest, economic and social crises, destabilizing government and for physically removing unwanted politicians and statesmen.

In her opinion, the time has come to harmonize and standardize Russian and Western legislative and regulatory systems on biological security.

"Instead of criticism and suspicions it would be more fruitful and useful for the international community to switch from debating the observation of the convention prohibiting biological weapons to strengthening cooperation in increasing the effectiveness of the modes of guaranteeing biological security and export control," Kalinina said.

"It is troubling that these matters have not yet become a natural and essential component of the Russian national security concept," she said. [RU EUROPE ASIA EEU EMRG VIO] ml np
