If living large means alcohol, fun in boats, and cigarettes then get ready to open your pocketbook or live a little smaller if the Senate's newly-released property tax cut plan goes into effect.

First, expect an extra 30 cents on a six-pack of beer or an extra $2 or so for a bottle of liquor. There's also a tax increase on boats and any new car.

House lawmakers will spare you on the beer and boats, but not so on cars and cigarettes in their plan. In fact, smokers would pay $1 more per pack under the House plan. It'll be 60 cents more under the Senate plan.

Then there's the proposed higher state sales tax. Senators want to raise an extra penny for every $2 spent on taxable items. While House lawmakers want to raise twice that.

Given the fact that politicians can never seem to cut programs and expenses, more taxes are a fact of life. Since that is the case, I prefer the sales tax idea because everyone who buys something in Texas will have to pay. lAll the illegal aliens, criminals, migrants, etc. will have to pay taxes if they buy something. We have to educate the children of illegals, so why shouldn't they bear some of the burden? My property taxes are already too high. Why should I be increasingly penalized because I work hard and buy property and build a nice house for my family? I'm actually in favor of a national sales tax that would eliminate all income taxes...but that's another subject.

Me too.

Sales taxes tax everyone's behavior. Income and Property taxes tax some people's income/wealth.

The first way is equality; the second is socialism.
