Arrest made at Coulter speech; Student arrested, charged with disorderly conduct after offensive question Wed May 04 2005 11:57:58 ET

Incessant heckling and shouting culminated in an arrest Tuesday night during a speech by controversialist Ann Coulter at the University of Texas at Austin.

THE TEXAN reports: Shouts became so pervasive during the question-and-answer session that Coulter informed the organizers she would no longer take questions if the hecklers were not silenced. For a time, the shouts were considerably lessened, until the issue of gay marriage was broached.

Coulter said she supported the definition of marriage as between a man and a woman on the basis that a good woman civilizes and inspires a man to strive for something better, leading to a question that was met with a stunned silence.

"You say that you believe in the sanctity of marriage," said Ajai Raj, an English sophomore. "How do you feel about marriages where the man does nothing but f*@k his wife up the ass?"

UT Police officers approached Raj to arrest him, resulting in a mass exodus of protesters chanting, "Let him go."

"The person had been disruptive the entire event," said Matt Hardigree, former Student Events Center president. "He took the opportunity to say something lewd and offensive and then made masturbatory gestures as he exited."

Hardigree said that Cheryl Wood from the Office of the Dean of Students spoke with some of the protestors before the event, and assorted members of the Distinguished Speakers Committee asked them to sit in the back if they had signs and to leave quietly if they wanted to leave.

According to Jeffrey Stockerwell, a friend of Raj, officers violently seized Raj and illegally searched him after his question.

Police have charged Raj with disorderly conduct, a Class C misdemeanor.

Representatives of the Austin People's Legal Collective were taking statements from everyone at the scene, in case it should be taken to court.

The booing began early into Coulter's speech, when she issued a joke to pro-choice advocates.

"I wonder why those 'I Heart Partial-Birth Abortion' T-shirts aren't selling better," she said, followed by a combination of cheers and jeers.

One student asked Coulter why universities and institutions place microphones in front of Coulter when she advocates terrorism against liberals, prompting Coulter to mention the strength of her book sales. Coulter has had four New York Times best sellers.

The $30,000 event was co-sponsored by the Texas Union Student Events Center and Student Endowed Centennial Lectureship Committee.

This is today's Democratic party for you: Disrupt and disrepect free speech like the good little neo-Stalinists tyrannts they are and make obscene and foul remarks and think that constitutes substantive speech. Republicans no longer have a political opposition. We're up against a seriously deranged rabble of haters, nitwits, petty tyrannts and foul-mouthed amoral adolescents.

Ahem - I've never met a heterosexual couple that had anal sex out of habit. It makes me wonder if the young man meant to say to Ann that "why doesn't she respect the sanctity of a marriage where a man f*cks another man up the ..." Anyway, the episode leads me to conclude Lefists are not only dsylexic, they're stupid. I find it amusing a beautiful woman has reduced them to the level of babbling idiots.

Ann, if you lurk here, please accept my apologies for the despicable behavior to which you were exposed while at my former alma mater.

This UT graduate is ashamed of these antics and embarrassed to be associated with this leftist den of ignorance and iniquity.

This is also the reason that that they get nada from me when they have their alumni drives. When the caliber of the education and the quality of the students improves, I might change my mind, but not before.

LOL! He must have been on an LSD trip when he asked his f*cked up question. I usually don't resort to a profanity in a sentence, but I'm making an exception. You don't need to gratuitously insult a speaker to get an answer. Apparently common sense wisdom has much of the Left raving like lunatics in the asylum.

Thanks for upholding standards as a mirror into which they refuse to look.

Shame on U of Texas. A fine institution sinking. Our own UD is not much better: at a recent John O'Neill event, our students were polite and asked intelligent questions, but the adults, including a "peace activist" and a "vietnam vet" (uh huh) monopolized the microphone and did not want to let O'Neill answer. Finally, O'Neill interrupted and the guy said, "I'm not finished," and he said, "OH YES YOU ARE" to thunderous applause.

Personally, I can advise that doing other things such as household chores, and telling her she looks pretty, are also helpful to a happy marriage.

Austin People's Legal Collective = communists

lawyer wanabees probably, current major is pre-law for now.

If anything I think protesting should not be allowed to count to any community service graduation requirement. In addition these hecklers should be suspended and have to reimburse the school for the disruption to the lecture.

As for the "illegal search", hogwash any 1st year will tell you a pat down for weapons is totally permissible. These are liberals/democrats and most likely a homosexual. Caution is very appropriate.

One student asked Coulter why universities and institutions place microphones in front of Coulter when she advocates terrorism against liberals, prompting Coulter to mention the strength of her book sales.

I'd like to ask journalists if there's a style book somewhere where asinine questions are reported as is but the answer is of no importance. I see these all of the time. If you can report the question clearly, then why not the answer? My guess is Ann probably shredded the dope.

Ann advocates taking the left to task for what they say. She recommends not conceding the arena of ideas to liberals simply because they make the most noise like in times past. We used to treat them like bratty children. Don't give them any attention and they'll quit. Well they didn't. I agree with her that the days of "play nice" are over. She uses facts to slaughter their fabricated truisms. I guess to a leftist, that would be terrorism against them.

Guys do cook and keep the house. It doesn't reflect on their masculinity. I don't see what the point of the guy's question had to do with marriage. It was just a rude insult because he knew Ann was a conservative.

It`s great isn`t it? All we need now is Hillary running for President and the `Rat party will go the way of the Whigs. The sane people of America will finally join together and flush this trash down the toilet once and for all and get a real American party to debate the issues for once, not one that does everything in it`s power to bring this country down. Just wait, it`ll happen and they are doing a wonderous job of it. I love it! We should encourage them as much as possible because the way they are going 2012 will be a Republican running against an Independent or something like the America first party. Democrats will go the way of the history books and they only have themselves to blame. You can`t constantly sh*t in a bed you share and expect people to put up with it.

I was thinking the same thing. My daughter is a top highschool student looking for a good college to attend. Got MIT, Princeton and Cal Tech on the list. She's interested in physics, and has very good math scores.

I suggested that she consider UT, but now I'm wishing I had not. Not just because of this, but because of a whole range of things that have been going on there that make me wonder which planet these guys are from.
