On April 14, an unusual joint hearing was held by the House International Relations and Armed Services committees. At issue were the national security and foreign policy implications of possible European Union arms exports to China. The clear concern of the assembled members of Congress was the enhanced threat from China to U.S. and allied forces if it gained advanced European weapons technology. Yet, two officials from the Bush administration made very odd remarks in favor of a "strong" China. Peter W. Rodman, assistant defense secretary for international security affairs, said: "The United States seeks a strong, prosperous and transforming China, and we support strong economic and political ties between the EU and China."

I do not deny that there are pro-China folk on both sides. Is Condoleeza Rice anti-China? She and Rumsfeld were the ones that got Japan on our side to help protect Taiwan.

Yes it does, thanks. There were threads here on FR in the days after the Bush administration was caught making these remarks, and still no good explanation. I used to be a supporter of big business, but lately they have done nothing but sell this country out, across the board.

Pat Buchanan has had it right for years. He may well be our Churchill by beating the drum about the danger we face from the mad trade policies we follow that build up our communist enemies.
