And to think the Jesuit Order (which runs Loyola University in New Orleans) was established to uphold and defend Catholic doctrine in the wake of the Reformation. Another "Catholic" university fails to follow its mission.

The Hand of Pope Benedict XVI will now be felt through out the Whole of the Catholic Church. The road back to the Lord will be difficult and will test the hearts of the laity.

Bravo to Archbishop Hughes. I live in the Milwaukee area where we have Marquette University another Jesuit university of higher learning. Never, ever doubt for one minute that the Jesuits aren't the most liberal, left-leaning priests in the world and aqbsolutely enjoy the good life for themselves.

During the 1960s, the Archbishop of New Orleans (Archbishop Rummel?) courageously informed the citizens of Louisana that suppor for segregationist policies was immoral. His words had a powerful, chastening effect at the time. Let us hope that his successor's words and actions will have a similar effect on Catholic and non-Catholic pro-aborts in New Orleans.

This is great news!! I will never send my children to a Jesuit school of any kind. I would rather send them to a public school than one that fakes its faith.

The Landrieu's helped spread Catholicism much the same way Tojo helped spread Shintoism.

I wonder if (former) Archbishop Philip Hannan will comment on this at the Saturday evening vigil Mass. I drive out to Pius X at the lakefront just to hear him; even at 91 years of age, he's still a politically-incorrect firebrand! It's good to see his successor showing similar backbone.

God bless Archbishop Hughes for standing up and saying no. I hope we continue to see some backbone from him and other bishops. It's long past time to get these "Catholic" universities in line.

The rot at Loyola University in New Orleans goes back a long way, both in the embrace of trendy liberalism and in accommodating bad conduct from Catholic politicians.

Years ago, in the 1970's, when I went to Tulane University, I frequently attended Mass at Loyola. To my great aggravation, the homily was often based on some awful left-wing political idea -- at times even delivered by the Archbishop. Students whom I knew at Loyola saw little to object to in this, which us what they were getting in their classes on a daily basis.

In New Orleans political circles of that era, Mayor "Moon" Landrieu -- father of Mary Landrieu -- was known for three things: (1) girlfriends on the side; (2) being on the take; and (3), going to many different parishes with his wife and kids in tow and working the crowds at Mass like a campaign stop. I am sure that all this was well-known to the Catholic heirarchy.

The same process of decay evident in Boston -- laxity in adhering to Catholic doctrine and unstinting support for corrupt and morally deficient Catholic politicians -- was thus also the case in New Orleans. The Landrieu clan is New Orleans' equivalent to the Kennedys in Boston -- and that description is in no sense a compliment.
