The LAPD was once known as "the world's greatest police department," due largely to its stringent character screening. Back in the era of Sergeant Joe Friday, LAPD candidates were checked out as thoroughly as homicide suspects. Even a casual relationship with any known criminal excluded a candidate from being considered as a police officer.
All that is now history. In a bid to appease racial activists and meet federal decrees, strict screening and testing measures were dismantled. New black and Hispanic officer candidates were hustled into the ranks at any cost. What former deputy chief Steve Downing called "a quagmire of quota systems" was set up, and "standards were lowered and merit took a back seat to the new political imperatives."
It was back in 1981 that the LAPD first entered into a federal consent decree that instituted quotas for female and minority hiring. To meet these demands, the standards for physical capability, intellectual capacity, and personal character were lowered. The result was that many incapable or mediocre recruits--even significant numbers with criminal links or gang associations--were accepted into the department.
L.A. is not the only city that damaged its police force in a headlong rush for "diversity." During the 1990s, Washington, D.C. had to fire or indict 250 cops after a similar lowering of standards, and New Orleans indicted more than 100 crooked or inept cops who had been hired--it was later found--due to "political pressures." Miami had a similar scandal after scores of cops hastily recruited in response to race riots and an immigration surge got involved in robbing cocaine dealers and reselling their drugs. "We didn't get the quality of officers we should have," acknowledged department spokesman Dave Magnusson.

Always sacrifice the safety and security of the citizens for the sake of feel good policies. The citizens don't matter anyway. What matters is putting people in jobs that pay well, even if crime goes up, more people die, and fear rules the streets.

This is news. A reading of almost any history of Hollywood or any biography of people from Los Angeles (Erle Stanley Gardner or Raymond Chandler) or reading some history of crime in the US would seem to indicate that the LAPD was always one of the most corrupt police in the US.

Here is this quote from an article by Glenn Sacks a Los Angeles based radio show host and journalist,
"Domestic violence activist Greg Schmidt, a police lieutenant who created the Seattle police department's domestic violence investigation unit in 1994, says that cases like Erickson's demonstrate the way men are often presumed guilty in domestic disputes. He notes that mandatory arrest laws, such as California's, frustrate police officers because they are "expected to make arrests in petty incidents, often where the woman is the aggressor, the abuse is mutual, or it is unclear who the aggressor was." "The domestic violence industry--the trainers, the shelter directors, etc.--can spin things however they want," he says, "but most street cops know that women are just as likely to start domestic disputes as men are. But arresting women puts you under lot of scrutiny. It's bad for your career." Schmidt also criticizes the dominant aggressor doctrine which discourages dual arrests (which are often an appropriate measure) and instructs police to downplay who struck the first blow. Instead, police are asked to focus on who is (supposedly) in control of the situation and who is more fearful--often code words for "arrest the man." Part of the problem is the training that police officers receive from the domestic violence industry, which insists that 95% of domestic violence is committed by men. Southern California domestic violence consultant Anne O'Dell, who has conducted over 500 domestic violence trainings of police officers and commanders, judges, district attorneys, and victim advocates, tells her trainees that "if a police officer is arresting more than 8% women, you've got a real problem. When an officer arrests 12% or 15% women, I'm outraged." O'Dell says that dual arrests should occur in no more than 3% of incidents."
There is virtually no current data which supports the "95%" myth. According to the US Department of Justice's 1998 Report on the National Violence Against Women Survey, men comprise nearly 40% of all domestic violence victims. California State Long Beach University professor Martin Fiebert has compiled an on-line bibliography (www.csulb.edu/~mfiebert/assault.htm) which examines 130 scholarly investigations (104 empirical studies and 26 reviews and/or analyses) which demonstrate that women are as physically aggressive, or more aggressive, than men in their relationships with their spouses or male partners. The aggregate sample size in the reviewed studies exceeds 77,000.
"By 2001, the LAPD was 884 officers short of full strength. Half the cops on the street suddenly had less than five years experience. The remaining veterans continued to leave in droves ... "
That was 2001. Imagine the gang bangers on the force now.

Here is one guy I really admire: Tiger Woods.
Not only is her an outstanding American, for his support of our troops and his generosity towards children- IMO- he is a great golfer!
Further- I have used his program, Start Something, START SOMETHING HERE, with my homeschool students. I highly recommend this program to any adults who are looking for a program to develop leadership in young people. It is a program developed by Tiger and his Father And it is free to anyone who wants it.
Oh- silly me....I digress.. Let's see what were we talkin about? Oh yes- the news- look! Tiger makes the news. As far as I am concerned this young man is a fantastic role model for my young boys.
BTW- I lived in Hollywood during the riots and Rodney King incident. The LAPD officers I met and relied upon for my safety were wonderful, hard working people who had one heck of a tough job. I saw crap I never want to see again- including a neighbor who had been shot. There are a good many hoodlums in LA - and the LAPD has it's share of nonsense to put up with.
I'm straight as an arrow and looooooong off the tee. Put an iron in my hand, other than a pitching wedge, and that's all she wrote. It's three-putt bogies after that.
The LA police department in the early sixties was regarded by the N. Eastern police agencies as the one to emulate. Rightly, or wrongly.
