Responding to a directive from the Vatican, Archbishop Harry Flynn has advised all parishes in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis to deny communion to anyone wearing a rainbow-colored sash.
For the past four years, supporters of the Rainbow Sash Alliance USA -- a group of Catholics who are active in the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community -- have worn the sashes to receive communion at the St. Paul Cathedral on Pentecost Sunday, the anniversary date of the group's founding in 1998.
Last year the service was disrupted when a group of 40 laymen protested the activists receiving communion by kneeling in the aisles in an attempt to block the path to the altar.
The sashes are worn as a symbol of celebration of God-given sexuality, according to Brian McNeill, an organizer of the alliance, who lives in Minneapolis. He said the sashes also represent an invitation to the church to open dialogue on the issue of human sexuality.
As he has in the past, McNeill wrote to Flynn in early April to advise him of the group's intended presence at the Pentecost service on May 15.
In a reply sent Monday, Flynn told McNeill that he had received a directive from the Vatican declaring that wearing the sash during communion is unacceptable.
Flynn said the sash has increasingly been perceived as a protest against church teaching, and asked that group members remove their sashes before receiving communion.

Let's hope the new pope puts an END to this cr*p straight away.
JPII, for all that he was loved, really let a lot of this stuff get out of control.
This new Pope is kicking butt!
Arrrrgggghhhhh, we almost missed this part:
"McNeill said. "The church is saying it only wants closeted gay people going to communion. That's troubling to me as a gay man. I think God would want me to be proud of who she created me to be."
"McNeill said"
Will no one rid me of this troublesome...
Wait a minute; that didn't work out too well last time, did it?
"Wait a minute; that didn't work out too well last time, did it?"
Oh please, let's try it again, and see what happens!
"As a Gay Man and a Gay Journalist"
-Doug Dangger Bump!
Uhhhh ... regardless of one's opinion on homosexuality, this argument makes no logical sense. Do we celebrate God-given schizophrenia? God-given cancer? Or irrelvancies such as God-given plastic? God-given freckles?
Hey wait a minute, I got a lot of sins, but I'm not a homsexual. I just must state that for the permanent record.
It is provocation - remember the movie The Exorcist?
This is coming face to face with evil and the Church needs to stand strong.
ya know adam and eve. (male and a female...go fig..)
begain the bible and basically introduces the really neat concept.
FREE WILL
god does not make one a bank robber or a gay.
A persons sins are their own, and they must face them and there consiquences.
Isnt it cute how one part of society not only wears there sins openly...but then labels you a hatemogger for not accepting there sins as the lords will.
btw are there sashes for other sins?
maybe ted kennady could wear a nice glutton sash to communion...ya know with lil piggys on it.
clinton with a forked tongue sash...ok clinton would have a closet full of diff sashes.
and what "Sin Sash" goes with Hillery's hair style?
flame on!
Removing a sash isn't enough, they must cease thier sinful ways.
Communion should be administered to all those who ask it reasonably, excluding, at least until they make sufficient reparation, public sinners and such as those who lead openly scandalous lives. So, too, it is not to be given to those likely to treat it with irreverence.
It is as impossible for the soul in the state of mortal sin to receive this Heavenly Bread with profit, as it is for a corpse to assimilate food and drink.
It is for this very reason that St. Paul (I Cor., xi, 28) demands that rigorous "self-examination", in order to avoid the heinous offense of being guilty of the Body and the Blood of the Lord by "eating and drinking unworthily".
Confessing and repenting sin (and meaning it) should precede communion.
Actually, you are supposed to dress modestly, be humble when receiving communion, not use it as an opportunity to stage a protest. The whole act of communion is lost on those people, it does them no good at all.
i agree
Its amazing to me that someone could wear a giant "I am a big fat sinner, and will continue to be" sash to church, much less communion!
its a giant insult to the church.
in effect telling the church to accept my sin as...not a sin.
sheesh
Contrary to the leftist newly revised version of History, that depicts Abe Lincoln as a closeted Homosexual..
I am fond of pointing out that Abe Lincoln was once asked about the issue of Gays and should they be allowed to "marry".
Lincoln said: "If you count a dogs tail as a "leg"...
How many legs does the dog have?
When one of the local members of the press posited;
"Five Legs?
Lincoln curlty said: "No asshat, a Dog only has 4 legs, because a "Tail" isn't a leg, no matter HOW persistant
the uppity gays may insist that it is!
Therefore Lincoln sagely concluded:,
"There can "BE" no such thing as Gay Marriage"!
Doesn't matter that Lincoln never said any of that,
-it's a great argument, and always manages to gut-hook
some poor unsuspecting purple-oid with a slow sense of humor;>
Pro-abortion politicicans are next.
No kidding!
