Politics: Edwards Looks Back—And Ahead to 2008 (Cahill Turns Red)

May 16 issue - It's traditional for out-of-work politicos to head to Harvard's Institute of Politics for genial wonk talk. It's also traditional for failed veep candidates to put major distance between themselves and their old campaign. The two customs intersected when John Edwards stopped by Cambridge last month. Over lunch, Edwards held a Q&A session with students, faculty and political bigwigs, including Kerry-Edwards campaign manager Mary Beth Cahill, a visiting fellow at the institute. Edwards was asked for one lesson he'd learned from the 2004 campaign. His answer: "Don't listen to Mary Beth Cahill." The response in the room was stunned silence, observers later recalled. "No one laughed when he said it, and Mary Beth grew bright red," said one attendee. "It was very awkward."

he same poll, however, showed Edwards behind Kerry as Dems' choice for 2008—with both Johns significantly trailing presumed candidate Hillary Clinton. Still, says one adviser, "someone will become the Hillary-alternative candidate ... The question is how do you position yourself to be that person."

Uhhhhhh, body armor and a lot of ol' crusty jokes?

Insist on Kerry signing the Form 180.

Get a brain transplant.

"how to keep his public profile up there and build a bigger network for 2008... If Elizabeth is well, he's going to make a run for it."

But if Elizabeth is dead he can trade her in for a woman with a glamour quotient to match his own. That's on like page 3 of the Kennedy manual on campaigning for office.

His answer: "Don't listen to Mary Beth Cahill."

He's right, of course...but he should know by now that you can't reach the top of a dem ticket by telling the truth.

I think they had a few bigger problems than Mary Beth Cahill. What a crass classless thing to say by putting the blame on her and sharing none of the blame himself! He can't say he was an outsider on his own campaign! Also, if he's so bright, how come he didn't know about the unspent $14 million?

Most VP candidates don't know what is going on in the campaign unless the Presidential candidate wants him to and they seldom have any private contact. Bush and Chaney are the only exception I can think of in all the years I have been working in campaigns.

This light weight ambulance chaser has about as much chance of becoming president as I do, and not even I would vote for me. (or is it not even me would vote for I?) Whatever, this little wannabee is a loser and anyone who contributes $$ to his campaign is a fool.

Won't it be great to watch the two Johns beat each other over the head again in 2008?

Ambulance chaser Edwards should remember the #1 rule for a speaker:

Know your audience.

We in NC are glad to be rid of this opportunist.

He can't say he was an outsider on his own campaign!

Its no secret that Kerry had no real choice but to have Cahill.

She was Kennedy's COS and alot of the operatives on the Kerry campaign came from Kennedy, she's like family to them.

That said, democratic tradition dictates then whenever dems lose a national election, a woman must be blamed. Its like some kind of rule.

It's hilarious or hair-lie-ius to think that $14 million spent would have made a bit of difference. Both Johns were dead in the water from the beginning. Kerry made Edwards look good by comparison, but that is about it.

Both Johns had fake hair, fake resumes, fake speeches, and fake claims to represent the little people. They are just as clueless now as they were then.

It is a sure sign of a coward that he shifts blame to others rather than taking the blame himself. By the way, why did they have $14 million unspent?
