Prostitution is illegal in Thailand. Feel free to snicker, but it is true. Therefore the gov't tends to not publish or even acknowledge a lot of info relating to it such as the rate of AIDS in prostitutes. It is possible that they did publish such a figure, but if so, it is ridiculous.

Lol. First you say that the government probably WOULDN'T publish it, then you say it that might -- but it would be ridiculous anyway. NOT clear, straight thinking from you, sir. Or perhaps your thinking reflects that of the government's -- still not straight or clear thinking.

I have no doubt that prostitution is illegal. No snickering from me. I also know that the SAME government does deal with the ravages of their illegal sex industry. THEIR media does have the honesty to report the sad tales of girls (and boys) sold into prostitution.

Perhaps the government does keep silent on the shame of their TOURIST sex industry, but that industry has helped spread their version of AIDS/HIV to other countries. The tracking viruses don't lie.

That same government DOES deal with their illegal prostitutes by trying to help them prevent AIDS/HIV with condom distribution. Why WOULDN'T they try to slow it down and help their people? To ignore the problem -- and Thailand isn't the only southeast country with the problem -- would only exacerbate it.

To pretend that Thailand doesn't have the same kinds of sex industry problems that so many other countries have, our own included, it to deny what's going on in so much of the world. Doesn't make any sense. Thailand isn't any worse than other countries -- or any better.

Their transvestite beauty contest SHOULD be a clue to you what kind of morality is considered important. It is really disgusting, pure Hollywood type of morality--validating the sick, abnormal lifestyles of the sick and abnormal. Perhaps you consider it all just good clean fun. I don't.
I like the Thai and this this is pathetic p.r. for a lovely country. Yes, I have been there -- loved it, the people and the countryside, though I couldn't ignore what was in front of my nose.

You mean the one on the left is a MAN and the one on the right IS really a woman? Lol.

Spread the word, maybe the homos will MOVE THERE!

Wouldn't that be nice?
I keep hoping Canada will allow homosexual marriages, adoption, the whole nine yards -- and they all move THERE.

It was almost a cliche., especially with the name of their capital.

Ah, yes. Krung Thep has such an exotic ring to it...

They do better with condom distribution than before, but there still is the same attitudes towards the sex industry, backed up by their government tourist industry.

LOL! The government is doing everything possible to shut down the adult industry here.

All you have to do it read and read and read international news for the past 40 years like I have done.

Well, I don't have to read the international news. I live here.

If you really believe "Promiscuity is considered okey-dokey" here, then you have a rude awakening if you ever do come here. Thailand is an extremely conservative society and outside of the bar areas, propositioning the wrong person is likely to get you sent to a hospital.

Sadly, they do have industry, but because Western investors get turned off by all of the things described in this thread, most of the industry is moving to the PRC.

In the PRC, 21 year old girls from the country go to work in factories. In Thailand, only some of them do, while many go to become bar girls and prostitutes. By the way, I am not fond of the PRC. I'd love to see Thailand getting a good many of those factories and jobs.

Lol. Don't tell that to killjoy, he simply refuses to believe that there IS a sex industry -- euphemistcally, "bar girls."

Of course, he DOES call himself killjoy -- he knows himself better. Too bad he's in denial about the country he lives in. He actually ADMITS it, saying that the government is clamping down hard on it. But he states that the government doesn't admit to there being a problem -- so how can a government clamp down on something that it officially refuses to admit exists? Lol. I got tired of dealing with killjoy's unclear and skewed thinking.

Prostutution has been an enormous problem for Thailand for decades and decades....especially since the advent of HIV/AIDS. Now the "girls" spread their killing disease ... and kill themselves in the bargain.

Prostitution is a lose-lose for everyone except the pimp$, bar owner$, pornography peddler$ and government enabler$, who for payola, turn a blind eye. Probably all from the same people, family, clan, mob.

I'm glad for Thais getting jobs too. Everyone should have the chance to work. Work is a good thing.

Killjoy -- don't you just love it when tourists become "experts" on Thailand after 1 or 2 visits?

You are absolutely right, though, about Thailand being a conservative country. Most Thais that I know, including my wife, are very traditional, religious people. The fact that prostitution and gays/transvestites are tolerated doesn't necessarily make them accepted. The same goes for promiscuity, which is definitely not accepted by most Thai wives (Thailand supposedly has the world's leading specialists in penis reattachment surgery, although that’s not something I intend to verify personally.)

Oh please. I never denied there is a sex industry here. What I took issue with was your made up statistic that 80% of bar girls have AIDS/HIV.

I further took issue with your insinuations that Thai women are easy and accept promiscuity. Absolutely nothing could be further from the truth. Yes, there are a lot of prostitutes here. That is obvious, but it is in no way accepted by the majority of Thais or is it acceptable in Thai culture. Prostitutes are greatly looked down on by normal Thais. They are at the bottom of the cultural totem poll. Your failure to acknowledge this shows your vast ignorance about Thai culture and society.

I don't believe you are as dim-witted as one might think by reading your reply.

You know very well I meant that it is unlikely, yet possible that the Thai government published stats that HIV/AIDS is 80% or whatever amongst 'prostitutes' when they resist acknowledging that there is prostitution here.

Your ranting on about Thai culture, morality, etc., is of no interest to me. Perhaps it is to others, but I just glanced at it so will not comment futher.

Perhaps you would like it to be all a giant right wing conspiracy by the MSM AND Halliburton.

Since Halliburton/KBR prepares my food and washes my laundry, I'll probably defer on that conclusion.

However, your "80 percent HIV positive" assertion is the stuff of myth, provided to you mainly by leftie sources, and yes perhaps even by some ecumenical groups, just for fair measure. In fact it's probably the only topic they agree on.

Stay safe!

Not a problem. The kids out on patrol - not to mention the KBR truck drivers, the pilots, and even the local convoy drivers - are the ones who deserve our support.

Ah, if I had seemed so dimwitted you would not have bothered to answer. I pushed a button on that chip on your shoulder DARING to criticize your precious homeland (adopted or whatever).

Having a TRANSVESTITE "beauty" pageant is well worth the rant and the criticism. It's a sick event. I didn't comment on their culture; that was you adding in your own words. But, for their morality? It IS a sliding backwards in morality, to me. This country does the same thing, validate sick behavior.

I don't have to LIVE IN Thailand to see what it does. Once I learned to read, I read to learn. It's sick transvestite beauty pageant that is on the internet on free republic. How public is that? No need to live in South Africa to know the ravages of AIDS/HIV there.

Besides, I was telling killjoy about his failed logic, and you butted it with your own skewed thinking. I don't have a crystal ball and don't know what you mean unless you write clearly, without denial or the "you know what I mean" nonsense. "Glance" at this thread no more, you can't deal with it. Go watch a travelogue, or something, all sweetness and light. Ignore the millions of AIDS/HIV victims in Thailand -- resulting from prostitution. Hey, it's a free country.

That is what this site is all about -- stuff, good, bad and ugly, is put up. What do you expect? You expect all of us to pretend that this SICK thing doesn't exist? That Thailand's society ISN'T taking a step backward, morally with this?

If so, you had should simply close your eyes and stop reading. Denial is your best bet. Thailand's tolerance has cost it a great deal of money and heartache with its sex industry.

Reason enough for worry about Thailand: it has boobs like you and killjoy (perfect name) living there. Ooops, sorry, that just popped out. .
