I've seen just about every werewolf, Dracula and mermaid movie ever made, I have a Medusa magnet on my refrigerator, and the Sphinx of Greek mythology is a role model for her lethal brand of mystery.
President George W. Bush's experiments in Afghanistan and Iraq created his own chimeras, by injecting feudal and tribal societies with the cells of democracy, and blending warring factions and sects. Some of the forces unleashed are promising; others are frightening.
In a chilling classified report to Congress last week, General Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs, conceded that Iraq and Afghanistan operations have restricted the Pentagon's ability to handle other conflicts.
The Republican Party is now a chimera, too, a mutant of old guard Republicans, who want government kept out of Americans' lives, and evangelical Christians who want government to legislate religion into Americans' lives.
But exploiting God for political ends has set off powerful, scary forces in America: a retreat on teaching evolution, most recently in Kansas; fights over sex education, even in the blue states and blue suburbs of Maryland; a demonizing of gays; and a fear of stem cell research, which could lead to more of a "culture of life" than keeping one vegetative woman hooked up to a feeding tube.
Even as scientists issue rules on chimeras in labs, a spine-tingling he-monster with the power to drag us back into the pre-Darwinian dark ages is slouching around Washington. It's a fire-breathing creature with the head of W., the body of Bill Frist and the serpent tail of Tom DeLay.

Tried to read it. Dozed off. SSDD. Sorry.
Maureen ain't getting any, and it shows in her columns.
"I have a Medusa magnet on my refrigerator..."
No, it's a mirror.
I saw her on CSPAN and she must think she is a world onto herself. A whining bitch. Whatever she is being paid - it's 100% too much.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz {snort} zzzzzzzzzz.
This kind of Maureen Down hyperbole goes over great with the New York Times' target audience. They like her rants. They like to see her stick it to us.
Do you have to ask?
I suppose. It just surprises me she's taken seriously by anybody. I mean, I don't take Mike Savage seriously, most conservatives don't. Why don't liberals do the same thing with her? I can't figure it out.
Very old news.
Do you have to ask?
Eat the wrong kind of mushrooms, and you c'n git tetched in the head. :)
And given the big name men who have briefly been in her life and dumped her, she doesn't appear to have been sexually competent either.
some really weird stuff. democracy talked about like some kind of disease? deployment to one theater reduces available military forces (duh) is discovered in a chilling report?
How can anyone take seriously a person who finds it "chilling" that resources are limited?
Ann Coulter said about the democrats, "in their search for 'monsters' they have become monsters themselves".
I guess dowdy just prove Ann's point.
Amazing the hypocrisy of this woman. She speaks of the report that we would have trouble fighting another war as "chilling." How so -- doesn't she oppose all wars?
