'Stupid' Siblings Arrested for Drugs After Reporting Break-In

Two brothers who called sheriff's deputies about a break-in at their apartment didn't take time to clean up the place.

They ended up in jail after the deputies they called Thursday found a pound of marijuana, other drugs and guns lying out in the open. The brothers claimed someone who had broken in randomly planted the drugs, but the deputies didn't buy it.

One of the brothers said "Do you think I'd be stupid enough to call police if I had drugs lying around the house?'' Salt Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Darren Carr said.

The front door had been kicked in and deputies believe someone actually did break into the apartment, but Carr said detectives believed Friday the intruders were drug associates of the brothers.

Inside the apartment, deputies found marijuana, two pounds of psychedelic mushrooms, an ounce of cocaine, two handguns, an assault rifle, scales and other drug paraphernalia.

Each was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, a felony, and a misdemeanor drug possession charge. Each felony charge includes a firearms enhancement, Carr said.

One of the brothers said "Do you think I'd be stupid enough to call police if I had drugs lying around the house?''

To which, one of the police officers replied, "Yes."

About 25 years ao, my best friend's older brother had several ounces of cocaine fronted to him by a dealer. He then called the police and reported a break-in that never happened.

He broke some stuff in the bathroom, and tried to make the place look as if someone came in through the bathroom window, and rummaged around the home.

After filing the false police report (and getting 4 cops roaming through his home with several ounces of cocaine hidden away), he called the dealer and told him that someone had broken into his home and stolen all the cocaine.

I was sure he was going to get killed, but I guess they bought the story. Anyway, that is probably the stupidest thing I have ever seen someone do with my own eyes.

This reminds of him.

I was representing a guy in an ugly divorce/custody battle a few years back and one Saturday evening he called and told me someone had tried to burn down his stand alone garage, but it was much worse than that, I needed to come over right away. I went to his house and he showed me in the back of his garage what appeared to be a meth lab on top of a washer and dryer. There was a hotplate with a beaker on it, tubing strung up over the rafters, mason jars and bottles of chemicals, coffee filters with residue in them, all of the sorts of things you would see in a typical meth lab bust. The fire had been started in the front of the garage and hadn't made it to the back of the garage. The fire department and police had been there and taken pictures, but had not noticed the meth lab items.

We weren't sure what to do. We knew his ex or her family had done this. They were rough characters and she had just been busted with a lab and believed that my client had something to do with the police showing up at her home. A boy walking down the alley told me he had seen a man lighting something and throwing it in the garage before the fire started. So I just called the police and let the drug task force take care of the lab. No arrests were ever made, but the girl showed up at court a few days later with chemical burns on her hands, no doubt from cooking dope.

That was about the meanest trick I've ever seen in an ugly divorce. It was right up there with coaching kids to say dad was molesting them (got that on tape in a case once). If the police had have found that "lab" when the fire was investigated, he wouldn't have stood a chance. To be honest, I probably wouldn't even have believed him. But he was set up. The lab materials were even in the photos the fire marshal took. That guy was so lucky. He'd still be in prison today if the firemen and police on the scene had have been paying better attention.

If someone broke into your house and 'planted' over five grand worth of drugs and guns, would you a) call the police or b) say thank you.
