Does anyone have any advice on how to get your website to become listed in Google and MSN and yahoo search engines? I have added my URL with the search engines "submit a link" process but my site isnt showing up on word results.
Meaning I can type in my site name and it will show up, but its not having any keywords find it.
I know there are a lot of internet savvy people here and was wondering, besides paying to have my site listed, any other suggestions on how to have my site show up in a keyword search? thanks
Flyer knows.
Don't expect it to show up right away. It can sometimes take months.
Did you do your metatags?
Ping
I don't know if this will help but I do know that some sites use "hidden" keywords. For example, if you were a farm and garden dealer you might have large areas of background in a blue color. Filling all this blue are keywords such as tractors, seeds, fertilizer, etc. repeated over and over in the exact same color as the background. Thus the keywords aren't really seen, but are listed hundreds of times on your site. I don't know if Google or others key into this, but I do know sites use this technique.
What metatags are you using?
I think you need to enter some keywords in the "meta" part of your source code. Type in all the words you want your site to come up under if people search for your site. Go to any website, select "view source" from your browser, and in the first few lines of the source code you should see a "meta keywords=..." section. That should give you some idea of what others choose for their keywords. There is no limit to the number you can do. For example, a Boston RedSox site would have "Red Sox, Schilling, Fenway," and stuff like that in the keywords. They just want to ensure that their site pops up whenever anyone types in search term that deals with their subject.
There are search-engine placement specialists who will bump your site up for you and keep it there. They do cost the earth, but they're worth it for the traffic they generate. If you don't have the means to hire one, then keep searching for and clicking on your own site thousands of times. Google lists sites in order of popularity, so you can drive your own numbers up.
You can also pay for Google advertising. The advantage here is that you can choose what you want to pay per click-through, with Google. You can turn Google advertising on and off.
Another way to do it is to cross-link with various other sites that might be complementary to yours. Your buddy has a link to your site on his, and you have a link to his site on yours. You can approach the webmasters or siteowners of sites that aren't in direct competition with yours but are in the same field or might be of interest to your customers. It's also possible to approach chambers of commerce and other business organizations that have links to private companies on their public sites. Since I don't know what your business is it's hard to make specific recommendations.
Best of luck!
I took a vitamin.

Google will block a site that indulges in exessive or repetitious Meta Content or uses hidden keywords.
how much is considered "excessive" ?
Boycott Google. They're a bunch of leftist jerks.
Bumping 'cause I'd like to know, too.
To get the best results via Google, make your sites' title descriptive. Google searches the text within the <title> </title> tags first.
Google also indexes the text on the page itself.
This is followed by the site description, i.e. <meta name="description" content="Site descpriton">
Keywords are towards the bottom of the list, since they are often abused.
Also, the more sites which link to yours, the better, since Google considers this a measure of a sites' "importance".
"Google will block a site that...."
Thanks for clarifying that; my intention was to help but sometimes just a little bit of knowledge can be counterproductive.
GONPO is scary and mean.
Ask GONPO!
In addition to the good advice I see from others.
Google, and other engines, prioritize by the title and by the actual content, as well as by popularity and meta tags. So, think of the keywords that you want to be found on, stick as many of them as possible in the page title, and sprinkle then liberally in the page content. It may be worthwhile to rearrange the page so that the keywords appear closer to the top of the HTML file. For example, a page that sells gardening supplies and begins with "Contact Us ... New Orleans ... Search ... New Photos ... Products ... Seed and Feed by Mail" will be improved if "Seed anf Feed by Mail" part is closer to the top of file.
The search engine will send a so-called robot your way. The robot will read the first couple of kilobytes of your page and index it by the nontrivial words it sees. If the majority of your HTML consists of generic stuff, the robot will not attach a priority to those keywords it does find.
You can trick the robot into thinking the keywords are for real while in fact they are hidden through some HTML trick. However, don't just repeat the same keyword a hundred times in a comment, -- the robots are smarter than that.
