State border police would be a likely hit with voters ( CA )

Every time Assemblyman Ray Haynes meets with a group of constituents, inevitably one of the first questions he gets focuses on illegal immigration. "What are you going to do about it?" they always ask. "When are you going to do something?" For years the answer was, not much.

Haynes, a Riverside County Republican, was sympathetic. But as a state lawmaker, he thought his hands were tied. Immigration laws have always been a federal responsibility.

That changed earlier this year when a Temecula man told Haynes he was wrong. A little known 1996 law, he said, authorized state and local governments to enforce immigration statutes. The state could do something, if it had the political will.

Haynes is now on a mission to see if that will is there.

It's hard to believe that a proposal for a state border police agency will be seen by many as a humanitarian act. But however it's viewed, the idea seems likely to be politically popular. With everyone from U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger talking about illegal immigration these days, it's clearly a subject resonating again with the voters.

And unlike Proposition 187, which sought to deny public services to illegal immigrants, the border police proposal seeks only to more effectively enforce current law. It will be difficult for opponents to demonize that concept.

Haynes has a long way to go to qualify his proposal for the ballot. But my sense is that if it qualifies, his proposal will probably be approved

Arnold would sail into another term if he get's tough with the pro-alien, anti-rule of law crowd. If the pro-illegals would rather bankrupt the state of California employee pension plan, that would be fine too. It would simply be vote-swapping. The democrats want alien voters so bad, just to stay in power. When the union employees wake up, it'll be too late to vote those criminals out of office, and they'll be in the same boat as the rest of us... slaves to the illegals.... Bwaaaaaaaaahahahaha....

Border police would be a hit with almost all voters. I really don't know anyone personally who is against closing off the illegal flow of alien invaders across our borders. This is the end of the United States coming and the leadership in Washington is asleep not realizing what is happening. This is the later stages of the trap set in 1965 by fatboy ted kennedy.

Always remember though, in California, the will of the voters doesn't matter -- any liberal judge can toss out anything he/she doesn't like.

"That changed earlier this year when a Temecula man told Haynes he was wrong. A little known 1996 law, he said, authorized state and local governments to enforce immigration statutes. The state could do something, if it had the political will."

I already knew that - many FReepers have been saying the same thing for years, just deafened political jackasses have only now begun to consider it.

"Designated INS officers and employees, and all other officers whose duty it is to enforce criminal laws, may make an arrest for violation of smuggling or harboring illegal aliens.

State and local law enforcement officials have the general power to investigate and arrest violators of federal immigration statutes without prior INS knowledge or approval, as long as they are authorized to do so by state law. There is no extant federal limitation on this authority...

Immigration officers and local law enforcement officers may detain an individual for a brief warrantless interrogation where circumstances create a reasonable suspicion that the individual is illegally present in the U.S.
"

See?

Ya know this whole business about a "state border police" is ridiculous! We're already paying for a military and Border Patrol that is not doing their jobs! Securing the border!
It's not our state's responsibility to fund "border police", it's the feds responsibility and I wish everyone would focus on the Bush administration.

We're already spending NINE BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR in California alone on illegals! And that's NINE BILLION we DO NOT HAVE! Enough already!

And if our illustrious governor were serious about securing the border he could call out the CA National Guard!
Maybe by doing that, it would embarrass GWB into doing something about the border! Like putting troops down there!
GWB certainly doesn't mind spending our money on border security in Korea, Iraq & Afghanistan or spending our money giving illegals ONE BILLION DOLLARS of our hard earned tax money for medical care!

Ha! I bet if they do this that within a couple of years they'll be just like the Fruit Inspection Stations on the way back from Reno.

STATION CLOSED. NO INSPECTION. KEEP DRIVING.

Only these signs will be in Spanish too.

I disagree in that I believe that the clods in Washington know exactly what they are doing.

?

Do you think they know that they are alienating many of their base constituents or do you mean that they are implementing policies they want, but are unaware of its consequences?

This is all speculation on my part, so take it for what it's worth. :)

They may be aware that they're alienating at least some of their constituents, but they either don't care or they feel they can get re-elected anyway.

As far as the consequences of the policies they're implementing (CAFTA, FTAA, illegal aliens to keep big corporations happy), they either actually believe these are good ideas, or they assume that if the stuff hits the fan, they will be left safe and sound on the top of the heap.

They're not going to be left unaffected by whatever transpires, but perhaps they believe it won't be all that bad for them personally.

I don't trust any of them. It appears to me that the sovereignty of this country is being trampled on and by our own government to boot! That's just unconscionable to me.

It will be difficult for opponents to demonize that concept.

Difficult, but not impossible if they play the race card. Which will come out any minute now.

If it isn't harvesting season why keep the Fruit Inspection Stations open?

They have not ever been open during the past two years at least due to "manpower shortages". These are the stations on the Interstate coming in to California where they are supposed to check your car for fruits and vegetables.

Besides which, it is hervesting season here. Strawberries, artichokes and cauliflower all coming in right now. In fact, the Castroville Artichoke Festival is this weekend.

We're already spending NINE BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR in California alone on illegals! And that's NINE BILLION we DO NOT HAVE! Enough already!

Spending money on a new California Border Patrol agency will eventually save us money. The proposed agency will guard the border and do internal round ups of illegals. We win all around. New illegals will be prevented from entering, old illegals will be deported, and others will decide that it is prudent to move back home or to another blue state. As the number of illegals decreases the cost they incur will be reduced.
