Part of a retaining wall has collapsed over the NYC Parkway, the 'Henry Hudson Highway'?

Could be a nasty commute home. No evidence of terrorism.

A retaining wall in upper Manhattan collapsed, closing the parkway in both directions.

It appears the damage is limited to the north bound lane.

FReepmail me if you want on or off my New York ping list.

Mayor Bloomie has taken some good traits from Rudy ,...they need this road , traffic will be going again by Monday a.m. but somewhat less , but that road cannot be closed for long

FoxNews now showing some video of firemen climbing around the trees.

Maybe we ought to send them some of our CalTrans workers who are used to such slides. [snicker]

News reports cannot confirm if anyone is trapped under the trees/debris. With rain in the forecast over the weekend, I shudder to think when this much travelled highway will ever reopen. They're predicting weeks, not days!

This and many similar structures are disasters waiting to happen. just as millions of basement walls buckle from hydrostatic pressures every year,it can take a long time from deformation to catastrophic failure.

Not just rebar, but anchor structures are needed that reach well into the hill behind the wall. and water diversion is critical;that is why a stacked rock wall may stand long after the concrete one is gone.Water can seep between every stacked rock. But stack construction is n't good for any real height. Sure hope no one was buried under all that debris.

They were saying there were like 10 cars buried. They also evacuated some of the huge apartment buildings that are on that upper level.

Terrible. And destroyed rush hour, that's for sure.

"...it's a wonder there aren't more collapses of this kind, and of buildings and water mains, etc."

Well, not sure about the buildings, they're at least supposed to get inspected.

But I do remember some years ago after a few water main collapses (explosions? how to be describe it) hearing the city guy saying these things are over one hundred years old, there's really no way to inspect them, or determine which are good and which are failing, so we'll just have to fix them as they give out. I guess they've repaired a few more since then.

Funny you should mention Riverdale as that's where I currently reside. I was in NJ today and decided I would be clever and take the Tappan Zee even though it was 20 miles out of the way from where I was. Well, wouldn't you know it everyone else did the same thing and it took me 2 hours to get home when it should have been 20 minutes. The kicker is the traffic reports were saying it was a 5 minute delay on the lower lever of the GW. Unbelievable.

Take the Deagan to W 230th Street or Van Cortlant or the Harlem River Drive to 10th Avenue to Dykman to Broadway.

That actually doesn't look as bad as I first thought. Most of the collapse looks like its on the entrance ramp to the highway. I bet they have the northbound lane open by tomorrow afternoon.

It was on the NY Times page and I clicked above the pic where it said "Enlarge this image". They have a slightly different one on the page now:

Agreed. That is a little used access road off of 181st street. I didn't know it existed until I stumbled upon once while visiting a friend in "Hudson Heights" which is a nice term for a slice of Washington Heights that isn't Washington Heightsesque.

I hope those people in the buried cars are OK. It seemed to me that this would have trapped some cars, given the volume of traffic on the parkway. Prayers that there are no fatalities!

The one you caught before is better. At least the last one shows work crews getting on the scene.

That's going to be quite an interesting repair project. How will they shore up the remainder while they remove what came down?

"I still miss NYC, even after being away for 50 years."

Everyone should be made to visit NYC every few years so they can appreciate where they live.

Actually, its a pretty fun town, to visit.
