Not Just A Last Resort?

A Global Strike Plan, With a Nuclear Option

By William Arkin

Sunday, May 15, 2005; Page B01

Early last summer, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld approved a top secret "Interim Global Strike Alert Order" directing the military to assume and maintain readiness to attack hostile countries that are developing weapons of mass destruction, specifically Iran and North Korea.

Two months later, Lt. Gen. Bruce Carlson, commander of the 8th Air Force, told a reporter that his fleet of B-2 and B-52 bombers had changed its way of operating so that it could be ready to carry out such missions. "We're now at the point where we are essentially on alert," Carlson said in an interview with the Shreveport (La.) Times. "We have the capacity to plan and execute global strikes." Carlson said his forces were the U.S. Strategic Command's "focal point for global strike" and could execute an attack "in half a day or less."

In the secret world of military planning, global strike has become the term of art to describe a specific preemptive attack. When military officials refer to global strike, they stress its conventional elements. Surprisingly, however, global strike also includes a nuclear option, which runs counter to traditional U.S. notions about the defensive role of nuclear weapons.

Moral of the story: If you want to dodge conventional ordnance, you might be surprised to get nuclear ordnance instead.

That is, if you keep causing troubles, confident that U.S. ground troops are stretched thin and can't deal with you, you might end up on the receiving side of U.S. nuke.

The other option is to wait until the mad Mullahs kill 10-20 million first with a 'pre-emptive nuclear strike'. The left just isn't happy unless maximum death tolls are achieved.

Which reminds me, anyone watching 24? The nuke is launched! but now I have to wait until next Sunday to see where it lands. It seems the bird is in the air due to hesitation on the part of leftist politics. Jack Bauer will save the day somehow I'm sure....

Re #6

Probably not against N. Korea. They would be likely to set off their nuke.

It is clear that Iran is being extremely foolish -- the mullahs seem to have no idea what kind of buzzsaw they are running headfirst into.

Oh yes they do, and they willing to take the casulties in order to achieve their goals. "If it's Allah's will, so be it"
is the mentality of the mad Mullahs.

Credible evidence that NK is selling nukes will result in an immediate US attack which, given the super-hardened nature of NK's nuclear weapons program, could only be done effectively with American nuclear weapons.

We'd also close NK ports with mines, and rail lines with conventional, precision-guided, bombing of the many bridges and tunnels. That would mean the immediate end of NK and starvation of millions of North Koreans. Better them than us. We don't have the means for invading NK on the ground due to access problems and terrain. The NK Army no longer has any combat effectiveness for reasons I won't go into now.

Iran is a different matter. We can destroy enough of its nuclear weapons program with conventional bombing to delay it for about a year, during which time we could overthrow its regime with a ground invasion. That is actually the optimum strategy for eliminating its regime - a "come as you are war" would dramatically reduce their ability to interfere with our buildup.

When things get really 'tense' and 'ramped up', you can be sure these North Korea threads will stretch wayyyyy past 15 posts/replies or so....

Better them than us.

It's sad really, and I hope it doesn't happen. The Iranians are good people, many of them are pro Democracy, pro Western ism and pro USA (more Pro Bush actually) I don't know if Iran's papers will cover this, but it's been said that there is an Iranian revolution brewing. I hope this threat tips the cauldron.
