Wichita Girl And Her Dog Chase Away Home Invader
KAKE News ^ | May 17, 2005 | Chris Frank

Posted on 05/17/2005 6:45:34 PM PDT by eccentric

A man who tries to break into an east Wichita home is surprised by who is there. The burglar thought the house was empty. Instead a child home alone helps foil the home invasion.

The ten year old girl would normally be at school. Instead she was home sick, alone. But she wasn't completely alone. She had the family pet, a pit bull terrier to keep her company.

Around 11:00am Tuesday, an intruder came to the home, perhaps thinking no one was there. As he kicks in the door he yells "where's the money?" Once inside, he was confronted by the girl and the family pet. Police say he got about 10 feet inside the door when the dog chased him away.

Police say the girl just saw the man briefly. They think she was startled and scared when he came into the house, so she was going to try to hide.

The description of the intruder the girl gave to police is that he was a black man, about 18 to 20 years old. He's about six feet tall, thin build. He was seen driving away in a light green or turquoise colored Dodge vehicle.

Used to not be a problem when society was safer. I took my first train ride alone when I was 8. Then about the time I was in High School (late 70's), society (ie, MSM) started whining about "latchkey" kids. Big deal, latchkey kids have been around since humans moved on two legs. IMO, by the time they're 10, they should be able to start taking care of themselves. Ever been to Japan, kids ride the subway to school by themselves in 3rd grade. I didn't take the subway by myself until I was at least 12. But like I said, society was safer then...

Well, apparently she can take care of herself. However, when the nanny state hears about this - look out!

If this had been a dog attack, the words "pit bull" would have been in the headline and throughout the article. Good dog!

I used to take the train into NYC when I was ten. Then I took the subway down to 14th street and haunted the book stores, where you could buy pulp SF. Thrilling Wonder Stories, Amazing, that sort of thing.

Your comments are interesting. When I was eleven I was sent to the home of an elderly relative who had just been released from the hospital after having serious abdominal surgery. I was 'hired' to take care of her, clean, cook the meals and do the laundry. I was paid $14 for the two weeks of work. Frankly, if someone had ever suggested that this same experience be visited on my child I would have busted them in the mouth. Children need to be children, in my opinion, and making them behave as adults, including taking care of themselves, leaves some permanent damage.

Just for a change of pace, here's a story where a pit bull scares the ~right~ person. ;~D

That is 5th or 6th grade.

She is certainly old enough to be left alone for a bit, though I would hope that at that age, a parent would still get off work to care for their sick kid.

But, it isn't that bad.

I think I was staying home alone in 4th grade - what is that, 8 or 9? My mom couldn't afford to take off of work, and I was very responsible.

Got to say good doggie! Pit bulls aren't all that bad! :-)

Sometimes dogs can be very protective when "their people" are sick. I know MY dog won't leave my side when I'm sick.

Your mother let you read that??!! I'm shocked! I'm sure you were permanently scarred by seeing that so-called lady's bare back and exposed whatever. Scandalous. What is the world coming to?

If you want to read about what kids can do, Read" Shadows Along the Koyukuk" , by Sidney Huntington.

Sidney lived with his parents along the remote Koyukuk River in interior Alaska in the early 1900's. His father had gone to get supplies when his mother ate some bad fish and died.

Sidney, the oldest of three children was left with the task of caring for his four year old brother and two year old sister. They survived for two weeks until help arrived. Their most serious injury was a case of diaper rash on the baby. Sidney was FIVE years old!! True story.

If the dog had attacked the intruder, the police may have had to kill the dog just to get him to let go of the body.

If this had been Denver, her dog would already have been euthanized and she would not have had any protection. Then what would have happened to her?

The dog deserves a medal and doggie biscuits for life.

Good for the doggie. I hope mom and dad give him/her lots of tlc and maybe even a steak.

I hope the girl lets him/her sleep in her bed. I know when I'm sick I like having my cat sleep with me.

At the time I thought the covers were pretty funny. Usually a half-naked lady threatened by a space monster. They never had any connection with the stories inside. Back then they had big piles of used pulp SF magazines at the used book stores on 14th street, I think for 5 cents apiece. I think I remember that particular cover, which is a real classic.
