I hope I'm not just missing the joke here ... you "tip your hat" as a sign of respect.

I think the phrase he meant here is "tip our hand", as in letting the guy next to you see your cards.

Virtually positive that it should be "tip your hand" as well...noticed it when I picked up the toon, but figured most would know what the cartoonist meant.
