NEWSWEEK COVER: Latino Power
Prnewswire ^ | Sunday May 22, 10:59 am ET

Posted on 05/22/2005 8:13:47 AM PDT by Brian Mosely

NEW YORK, May 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Los Angeles Mayor-Elect Antonio Villaraigosa accomplished what Democrats dream of doing nationwide: he energized Latino voters to turn out for him at historic levels and stitched together the sort of multiracial coalition that has often eluded less-gifted politicians, Newsweek reports. In the May 30 Newsweek cover "Latino Power" (on newsstands Monday, May 23), Miami Bureau Chief Arian Campo-Flores and Chief Political Correspondent Howard Fineman assess the impact of Villaraigosa's election on national politics and the Latino vote. Though they won the Hispanic vote last November, Democrats lost ground to Republicans for the second straight presidential-election cycle. To remain viable as a party, Democrats need to win Latinos back. At stake is nothing less than control of the presidency and Congress. If the GOP maintains its current share of the Latino vote, "then the Democrats will never be the majority party again in our lifetimes," Simon Rosenberg of the New Democrat Network, tells Newsweek.

< snip >

"As with the Irish, so too with Mexican-Americans, as Villaraigosa's comfortable margin of victory in the Los Angeles mayor's race attests," Rodriguez writes. "Villaraigosa, a onetime militant campus activist, fashioned his first race for the mayoralty in 2001 around a labor-left-Latino alliance. He lost. Four years later he broadened his message, built a more ideologically moderate multiethnic coalition and won by nearly 20 percentage points."

Funny how they never mention how all (>90%) the legal Latinos in the US are mad as hell ant the tsunami of illegals, ruining everything they've worked so hard to build.

And what really kills the "pro illegal" liberal moonbats is that legal Latinos are very conservative, and primarily vote republican nowadays...

It's even scarier that the President of the United States refuses to stand up for California and the other invaded states and put a stop to the mess that's coming over the border every day and every night.

Conclusions of the U.S.-Mexico Migration Panel

In addition, they, along with his eminence, Mexican President Vicente Fox, believe they should be allowed to vote in our elections as well as Mexico's, even if they know less English than I know Greek

LULAC's apparent attempt to denigrate the meaning and value of U.S. citizenship extends to the franchise. In The 1998 LULAC Legislative Platform, the organization appears to condone, if not actually promote, the violation of this country's election laws. According to the section entitled ''Voter Registration and Citizenship'' ''LULAC actively encourages eligible Hispanics to fully participate in the democratic process and register to vote. We also encourage those who are eligible to become citizens'' (italics added). Since the law states one must be a U.S. citizen in order to be eligible to vote, the wording of this LULAC platform encourages voter fraud.

• MALDEF successfully lobbied for passage of the ''motor-voter'' bill of 1993 that allows voter registration at welfare offices or when applying for a drivers' license; mandates mail-in voter registration and discourages States from verifying the applicant's eligibility or citizenship.

Latino power, Black power, seems all the minority groups can lay claim to militant organizations and slogans.

But, the damnable Gringo or Honky had better keep his mouth shut and his arse out of even daring in any manner having the audacity to promote European pride or culture.

Evil are the Europeans you know, pure evil.

LA's new mayor for most of his life was an extreme radical who advocated turning the Southwest into the new nation of "Aztlan," the stated goal of MEChA, of which he was a high officer for many years.

In Spanish, mecha means "fuse," as in the lit fuse of the dynamite bomb the eagle is holding in the official MEChA logo.

Ahem, let me remind you that it was a race between 2 Democrats. The GOP had NOTHING to do with all this. So, L.A. (which is 1/2 Hispanic, I think) voted in a Mexican mayor. Is that really a surprise? Newsweak talks and talks . . .

Maybe that's because it was part of Mexico before. When it became a state they didn't force the people out. Many of the families have been there for more generations than America has been a country.

California has been 'multi-culturaled' to death. Los Angeles schools have to deal with over 160 different languages. Only a complete fool, or a person with a hidden agenda would praise this as 'making our nation stronger'.

A recent article stated that over 50% of Los Angeles adult men are unable to either read or write elementary English.

Our Presidents and Congress don't care that California is slipping into utter chaos. They don't care that latin Separatists gain mayoral positions or come within a hair's breath of taking the Governorship of the state.

There are millions of illegal immigrants in the state of California. They are vastly over-represented in our jails and prisons. They are ripping off the state for billions of dollars in funds each year. Our highways and infrastructure are bursting at the seems, as our population soars.

Tens of billions of dollars are extracted from our economy and sent to another nation. Of thos billions, a large portion were obtained in a black market devoid of tax exposure.

What will happen is that when the separatists have captured the highest offices in the state, they will start a legitimate sounding effort to claim California pays more taxes than it gets back from the federal government. It will be stated that California would be better off if it went it's own way. Many will sucker for that line, and California will depart.

That won't be the end of it. When California's gone, the flow outward from it will be gigantic. It surrounding states will be the next to go. Places like Texas and others which are already being flooded with foreign nationals will be next.

The dominos are in place. It's only a matter of time. I used to get worked up over it, but you know what, I've had it. If the citizens of this nation are stupid enough to let it happen, and just about everyone from the President on down are, then perhaps it is best.

A nation with leadership and citizens this stupid, shouldn't control it's own destiny.

"55 ELECTORAL VOTES."

Just in Texas, Kali, Colorado, Arizona, Neuvo Mexico, Nevada, the illegal Mexicans can push 118 electoral votes.

Toss in a few other states that they have invaded and may control within the next three years: OK (7), FL (27), SC (8), NC (15), GA (15), WY (3), IL (21), (96 total) and they can control 214 of 270 needed to win.

Add in Democrat states already heavy Dem, NY (31), WA (11) ME (4), MN (10), WI (10), MI (17), PA (21), and the Dems have a lock on all elections.

Scary, isn't it?

Think he cared about California's electoral vote? Think he gave a damn about the citizen of the U.S. that lived there?

He's willing to cut loose a state that when measured by other nations, would be fifth or sixth in the world. Now there's a brain trust for you.

Why do those who are mad at illegal immigrants keep voting in pro-immigrant politicians?
Because for many Mexican-Americans,as for many other ethnic groups, they tend to cling together when one of"theirs"is perceived to be under attack.True, many legals are upset at the flood of illegals which undermines their wage gains and exacerbates tensions, brings more gang activity, etc.
HOWEVER,they tend to band together when they see the opposition to the illegals has a mostly white face-The Minutemen,SOS,FAIR,etc.
I truly believe the credibility of these anti-illegal groups would be much enhanced if they were not almost all white in composition.Where are the blacks, the Asians and the legal Mexican immigrants at these protests? The absence of these groups makes it seem like a white-Mexican issue and that dynamic can have tragic consequences.

The immigration debate is rapidly moving to the point that the final argument will have to be in .223, .45, or 7.62x39mm.

Ethnic cleansing will be nasty in a state this large.

I wonder if we will get aid from our neighbors or stand alone.

Because everyone isn't mad as hell. People support illegal immigration. That's why they elect these politicians. The battle to stop la reconquista has been lost before it even began. People here feel to "guilty' for past racist injustices to ever be able to stand up to this obvious invasion. Political correctness will prevent any meaningful enforcement of current immigration laws, let alone enactment of newer ones. You either support illegal immigration, or you are a hateful racist. No other options in today's society. I guess that means I am a hateful racist.

Excellent points and well said DoughtyOne.

I'll tell you what change I've noticed over say, the last 20 years. It's a look in the eye. They don't hold what the gringo is and what we have accomplished in very high regard any more. They have been poisoned by incessant racial rhetoric from their "leaders". Not unlike JJ and his band of flying monkees. The opportunities created in this country for those that would assimilate gringo's values are boundless. What do the illegals, and now many legals, want to do? Tear it down and remake it in their own image. It's just a cultural thang you know.

Nations/societies/cultures come and go and since I'm not much of a historian I can't really say what causes most to collapse, but I have my suspicions.

No, it just means you have common sense. Ultimately there will be a reckoning but I figure it will take a couple years. More and more states are being invaded and people are finally starting to look up and say "hey, what's happening here?".

Too many American's are more interested in seeing who's the latest American Idol than seeing what's happening in their own country. But I do see a change.

Hey EVERYBODY, what a great chance at a political statement! Please nominate me, Rosanna Pulido for Latina of the year. WHY?

Some points you can use

2)She is a stellar example that Mexican can follow the law and be successful.

3)She is an organizer of the Chicago Minuteman Project, who's group will expose politicians voting records and it will reveal if they have upheld their oath of office, which will make a more secure Illinois.

4) Her group will expose companies that hire Illegal Aliens instead of paying a decent wage to legal residence of Illinois.

5) Through her political activites in these areas, she is striving to insure that all Law abiding Mexican Americans can continue to pursue their American dream and trust that the state will be enforcing it's laws which is needed for a secure future for Mexicans in Illinois.

Why should one type of heritage take precidence over another? Who are you voting for African-American of the year. I thought this was America, the melting pot where all people are expected to assimilate and we judge people on their character rather than the color of their skin. I believe all this racial stuff is detrimental to our society.

Los Angeles Mayor-Elect Antonio Villaraigosa accomplished what Democrats dream of doing nationwide: he energized Latino voters to turn out for him at historic levels and stitched together the sort of multiracial coalition that has often eluded less-gifted politicians,

More BS from NW...the turnout of registered voters was just over 30%...of that Villaraigosa captured 58%. Not so much that the voters where voting for Villa, but rather voting against Hahn...regardless, the results stand...but Newsweek is really embellishing the results.

I don't know about other states, but those in California who are mad as hell about illegals are voting with their feet. They are leaving California (or at least Los Angeles) in droves. (Now many are finding that their new neighborhoods are being invaded, as well. They can run from this invasion, but they cannot hide.)

Besides, in this particular election, we had no choice. Hahn is the one who proudly proclaimed that Los Angeles is "a Mexican city." He isn't much better than Villaraigosa.

It is going on regardless! These are MALDEF kind of folk. I am a Latina they need to hear about who has stood against everything they stand for!!
I am a conservative Latina who is on the right side of the issue.
I have stood along other freepers , FReeping Hilary ansd organizing a rally for our troops when the war broke out.
It is NOT about me!! It is about the message we are sending to these freaks!

OK, I can see where you're coming from. You are trying to send the message "it's OK to be Latino and be conservative" and you prefer a Latina conservative to win rather than a left wing type Latina.
