ROTFL! That cracked me up! Oh, how I WISH I could toss some of my Mr. Onyx's BOOKS into the commercial dumspter he rented for me! It was delivered on Monday (was that only yesterday?) and the damn thing is already FULL, but it doesn't contain even one of his books! I did, however, manage to put his breadmaking machine and 14 pricey dress suits of his (doctor clothes) out on the lawn for the Veterans.

If I ever have to move again, I'm going on strike. At this point, I'm sort of trying to break an arm or strain my back...lol.

Best wishes to you and know you have my sympathy.
Please keep me informed on your progress.

I appreciate your well thought out response but still disagree.

Bush & Friest have a lot a power. Power over chairmanships, pork, base closings, RNC campaign contributions, etc. Had they made this a test of party loyalty vote - and made it clear that retribution would be forthcoming - I think Dewine & Graham would have stayed on board.

Why do you think DeLay is called the Hammer? The repubs in the house have a fairly small majority but the Hammer keeps them in line. Yes, the senate isn't the house, but if Friest and Bush can't keep the party together on this, where we have the high ground, they have no chance on social security.

The appellate courts are almost evenly divided right now. If we really can get 6 or 7 new appointees through, we'll be in control of the federal judiciary for the first time in decades.

Several are, you are right. In fact, I think if these nominees are truly conservative, it will tip the balance on 4 or 5 appelate courts. The one that we are hopelessly behind on though is the biggest court in California that controls most of the West. I believe it is the 9th circuit.

The holy grail though, is the Supreme Court. Bush will get 2, possibly 3, nominees, IMHO. If all are conservative, and Scalia becomes Chief Justice, we really will control the judiciary.

The 9th circuit is a lost cause. We will not control it for at least a generation, if ever. And that is acceptable, so long as we have at least one or two other districts firmly in hand.

I think this compromise bodes well for Bush's supreme court nominees. Graham and DeWine will not oppose them, and I think that there will be significant pressure on the 7 Democrats to permit a vote as well.

The more time that passes, the better this deal is going to look for our side.

I hope you are right. I am concerned that all the people I tend to listen to when forming an opinion are pretty upset. Of course, that is because we would have beaten the Democrats into a hole rarely to be heard from again if we had gone ahead and forced the issue. It is like this gives them some new life, though not as much as some are ranting about.

I mean, if anyone is nominated that is comparable to Owen then Democrats will be breaking their agreement if they do not allow a vote. I can live with that. That being said, there is a larger issue involved. Saad and one other were tossed overboard. Why? He too had plenty of votes to win confirmation, otherwise why the filibuster?

I still have trouble reconciling myself to his vote against Robert Bork in 1987.

While it's true that Arlen Specter was probably more responsible for sabotaging his nomination than any other Republican, you can't really fault him.

After all, no one ever seriously considered Arlen Specter anything other than a Philadelphia Republican, i.e. a liberal Democrat.

But Warner's vote against him lends the leftist witch-hunt against that remarkable jurist a retroactive aura of legitimacy, which allows historians to claim that he was a "judicial extremist," and tar him with other blatantly false calumnies.

A COMMERCIAL DUMPSTER? A COMMERCIAL DUMPSTER? OH YES, YES, YES!

(lighting a cigarette now)
That was wonderful!

"breadmaking machine..."

Yeah, the rice cooker looks like it would fit nicely into the Vets bag, wrapped in the clothes he's still keeping in case he ever drops back down to the size he was twenty years ago.

The problem is that Senators generally have less need for the party than the party has need for each Senator. With few exceptions, Congressman need the party more than the party needs them. Therefore, the balance of power is different in the party/member relationship in the House and the Senate.

Probably Frist could have done more, but I question whether he could have done all the things that you say.

Chairmanships go according to seniority based on what committees one is assigned to. However, one's initial assignment to committees is partly luck and partly clout (so Frist could influence). However, I think that, barring a vote from the caucus to change a Senator's committees (rarely or never done) or a change in committee membership numbers following an election, a Senator can stay on a given committee unless he wants to change. In other words, Frist cannot remove someone from a chairmanship, absent extraordinary circumstances and acting with the caucus' permission.

Base closing is under control of the base closing commission. Congress intentionally put that hot potato into the laps of former officials, former Congressman, former Senators, etc. Now each member of Congress and Senator can denounce the BRAC (Base Re-alignment and Closing) process and make efforts, almost always futile, to undo any decisions that hurt their Congessional District or State.

RNC efforts could certainly be influenced by Pres. Bush and Sen. Frist, but I think the more important contributions in the Senate races are provided by the National Repub. Senatorial Committee (NRSC). Since NRSC is now controlled by Senator Elizabeth Dole, it is doubtful that they would sanction those who break faith with the party.

As to the pork, didn't you know that Republicans don't do pork? But seriously, I guess Frist could block pork for those who mess up the party IF he ever learned how to block pork.

If Frist could get control of some of these Senators' tee-off times, maybe he could get more to tow the line. Controlling their golf access could be the solution. If only :)

OH, I'm so glad you came back before I have to get my youknowwhat in gear.

The Veterans have departed with a full load.

Yes, LOL, he rented me a commercial dumpster. I have called the company and begged them to come empty it! Right now, it's filled to its brim and I am starting to fill garbage bags with other stuff; mainly children's toys.

Absolutely ditch the rice cooker! I got great pleasure from "gifting" his beloved breadmaker to the Veterans. His crock pot and some other cooking device are next. I hate specialty cookware.

You cannot know how thrilled I am that you posted to me! Misery loves compnay...lol.

LOL! Well, thanks for helping me decide about the rice cooker. Now, here's my idea...if he hasn't unpacked it since our last move five years ago...he doesn't know it's there anymore, right?

>My understanding of this compromise is that it included vows by the RINO members of this committee to never support stripping away the minority right to philibuster. If these 7 RINOs agreed to that, we don't have the votes to pull out the nuclear option and we likely will never have it again.<

Right, but the 48 GOPers who still believe in acting as a majority should at least bring up the judges anyway. Then if the Demos and the RINOs want to filibuster, Frist should just say, "Fine. Start talking."

The GOP leaders should force them into a real around-the-clock filibuster, 24/7, which ends any time the Demos/RINOs can no longer keep talking. Wnen they stop talking, then there's a vote. If the judges get voted down, at least people are on the record for voting yes or no.

>All we can do now is watch.<

Watch. Remember. And vote.

And those of us who cannot vote in one of those states (which would be most of us, by definition) we should all make certain to donate to any GOP primary opponents of the Gang of Seven RINOs.

Not strange at all and you still don't get it.

When you are "talking behind someone's back"/ making derogatory comments about a poster, the rule is that you include their nic in the header. Playing stupid isn't a good way to CYA, BTW.

Not "thanks to people like me", at all, pet. You got stuck with Obama because of Alan's hubris and the moronic Ill. GOP "leadership".

And as far as being a Conservative, my qualifications, to call myself one, are perfect.

Thanks. I wish the GOP would follow my lead.

Way back in the '60s, I said that it was time for the GOP to take their collective white gloves off and FIGHT! Four decades later, I'm still wishing for the same thing.

LOL...I've always worked behind the scenes and that's how I like it. But I'd be happy to go give lessons to the spineless, gutless wonders.

BTW, Mr.np called the Republicans "wussies" too, when I railed against what McQueeg and his gang of 7 had pulled.
