Trial over Italian Islam 'insult'
BBC ^

Posted on 05/24/2005 5:48:00 PM PDT by Alex Marko

Controversial Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci is to face trial for allegedly insulting the Muslim faith in her latest book, a court in Italy says. Ms Fallaci is being sued by the head of the Muslim Union of Italy, who says The Force of Reason is defamatory.

The journalist caused an uproar with The Rage and the Pride, published two weeks after the 11 September attacks.

In it, she said Western culture was superior to Islam and Muslim immigrants in the West had "multiplied like rats".

Her lawyers have defended her right to express controversial opinions.

"At the heart of her thinking is the following reasoning: the fight against Islamic terrorism is made more difficult by intellectual terrorism cloaked in anti-racism," Gilles Goldhagen, said in 2002, when a French judge was hearing a case to ban The Rage and the Pride.

'No good Islam'

The Force of Reason is said to have gone to print about 24 hours after the 11 March 2004 train bombings in Spain.

In it, Ms Fallaci argues that Europe is turning into "an Islamic province, an Islamic colony" and that "to believe that a good Islam and a bad Islam exist goes against all reason".

Italian preliminary investigative judge Armando Grasso ordered the formulation of charges against the author, saying the book had expressions which were "unequivocally offensive to Islam".

Adel Smith, president of the Muslim Union of Italy, sued the writer on 8 April 2004. He says Ms Fallaci has been advocating and spreading hate against Islam and Muslims, sometimes by allegedly distorting real historical facts and inventing others.

The case is being tried in the northern town of Bergamo, where the book was published. The prosecution has 10 days to come up with a charge.

Ms Fallaci, who lives in New York, was a Resistance fighter in World War II and a former war correspondent.

"Save it to your hard drive while you still can."

Good Idea! I'm going to do that right now.

Self-censorship in effect at this time.

Western civilization needs to decide if we want to survive. If we do, we better start having A LOT more children. And that goes quadruple for Europe.

"Perhaps we could put her in the same room with Lindthay Graham and see who comes out smokin'!"

Amen my brother. We'd be proud to light her fag, as the Brits say.

I actually own the English-language version that Rizzoli published in the U.S.

It's a shame it didn't get the publicity in North America that it did in Europe.

There are still a lot of people here who have yet to be awakened from their pre-9/11 slumber.

Really seems strange to see this written out - even in the land of the 1st Amendment. Thank you for the thread on Ms Fallaci.

These Black Shirts-or to be more accurate, Green Shirts-employed a nearly identical strategy of litigation in their quest to intimidate acclaimed French novelist Michel Houellebeq, when he had the audacity to question whether the French concept of laicite could be reconciled with a medieval interpretation of a religion that expressly rejects many Enlightenment values upon which modern Western society is constructed.

What these fanatics don't seem to fully appreciate is that the very attempt to suppress speech invites even more publicity-and subsequently, awareness among the general public-for the person they are seeking to silence.

What's even more amazing is the fact that most of these would-be censors probably own at least one copy of the seminal text for the resurgent, radical Islam of the latter half of the 20th century "Milestones," a book that was routinely subject to confiscation by the Egyptian government, which ensured that its author would not live to see it become the lodestar for the revival of obscurantist, apocalyptic Islam the world over.

France is gone beyond saving. Italy has been in their sites as weak for A WHILE NOW.

Italy has been all over their Net communications.

Oriana has been receiving death threats for the past few years.

This Trial is way more political in weight than Oriana's writings.

If she loses, Italy will be more lost than Oriana.

I'm so tired of these whiny Muslims. None of us are EVER going to accept Islam. Their religion is false, and they need to get over it..

I'm waiting for the inevitable reaction when someone names their state-fair-prize-winning hog "Muhammad".

What a great idea. I don't do state fair pigs but I'll put the word out to some of those who do. Could you see the outrage if it won the grand prize? LOL!! I would love to do that commercial. It would also be a hoot to name one of those pet pigs Mohammad. :-)

It's been a while since I read that one from Miss Fallaci.

Thanks for the link Alouette.

Hope her book sells like hotcakes. I've been saying Muslim immigrants to Europe, legal or otherwise, were breeding like rabbits, but 'rats' describes them perfectly.

Italy has the lowest recorded birthrate of any nation within continental Europe.

Coupled with the seemingly unbridled immigration from North Africa, Albania, and the rest of the Balkans, I wouldn't be shocked if the religious composition of that nation changes rather rapidly in the ensuing years.

Yes, she may have insulted TROP, but aren't her assertions regarding TROP truthful?

Muslims really know how to work the systems they hate, another resemblance to the left.

They are suing their critics to shut them up. And the European systems, especially hate speech laws and libel laws in UK, are having an impact. Canada also has hate speech laws.

Dr. Rachel Ehrenfeld was sued for writing of a Saudi's charitable terror ties.

CAIR has several suits including one against Daniel Pipes, and David Frum.
