Q. If you call a dog's tail a "leg", how many legs does a dog have?

A. Four. Just because you call a dog's tail a leg doesn't make it a leg.

Just because you call Gitmo a "gulag" doesn't make it a gulag.

How come the countries that had real "Gulag" issues (former Soviet republics and Warsaw pact countries) are wholeheartedly supporting the US in our foreign policy and in embracing democracy?

I think that we are being mightily bullshat by the left again.

Amnesty Interantional should just shut up. Have they complained about the REAL human rights violators?

well, yeah - thats pretty much what they do.

a quick google reveals amnesty reports from 2002 condemning saddams regime.

heres a 2001 report on the taliban in afghanistan

amnesty international have always been trying to get the world to listen to them about the treatment of prisoners around the world. if you are ignorant of that, it doesnt mean they didnt do it.

Where the HELL were they when Saddam was dishing out justice? I never heard a peep! What a bunch of Yahoos.

dont you even bother using google before ranting about an organisation you are apparently ignorant of?

heres an example:
Amnesty Report from 2001: IRAQ - Systematic torture of political prisoners

as i said in a previous post, just because you are ignorant of amnesty internationals work before this particular example doesnt mean it doesnt exist. amnesty has been busy criticizing regimes and dictators while most of the western world doesnt care.

If these guys are released, they will go back to killing civilians and plotting against the United States. That would be a great victory for human rights, wouldn't it? There's a war on, these guys are prisoners of that war, and when the war is over, they'll be released.

Amnesty International complains about the U.S. because the U.S. is the only country where someone might actually take them seriously. Their pronouncements, as they well know, have absolutely no effect in the real tyrannies of the World.

Apart from the chain link fences and the razor wire, the prisoners in Guantanamo are living better than they were when they were waging "Jihad".

Amnesty International probably does a decent job reporting serious human rights violations.

But the fact is they go way overboard in damning the USA and its allies (especially Israel). Their disdain of Bush and the WOT is evident. AI stated in Nov 2001 the WTC attacks were a matter for international courts, and NOT a military response. AI basically tried to rationalize the actions of the 19 hijackers.

That creates a serious credibility gap, especially for those of us who watched American citizens jumping from the 104th floor that awful day.

Was it a few weeks ago AI was only partially critical of the Palestinians, pointing out they should NOT use children for the suicide attacks on Israel? Duh.

Again, a credibility issue. If AI truly sought to point out human rights violations, it would have lambasted suicide bombers in general.

But what sells and what gets donations is laying out the USA. Using deliberate inflammatory descriptions such as GULAG is just over the top rhetoric. It doesn't pass the smell test.

Again, the credibility issue.

AI needs to separate legitimate military prison operations from REAL human rights violations (like ACTUAL gulags and state-run torture chambers). Any prison system that provides 3 meals, religious observations, medical treatment, and clean living quarters is a damn sight better than a gulag.
