BAGHDAD - The government announced Thursday that a security cordon of 40,000 Iraqi soldiers and police will ring Baghdad starting next week to try to halt a spree of insurgent violence that has killed more than 620 people this month. The interior minister, meanwhile, said his office believes militant leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was wounded, while an Internet statement claimed that Iraq's most feared terrorist group had appointed a deputy to fill in for the Jordanian

Does anyone else out there wonder why the heck they are announcing this? Geez, I never appreciated what a hard job it is to get these people to do their own security.

Because the AP is a front organization for the loony left.

I agree with you, but I was actually asking why the Iraqi Government was announcing it. Don't they want to surprise these jerks?

Looks like psychological reasons to me. I don't think even 40,000 troops can effect an air-tight cordon. They need the people to support them. The people will feel a lot safer pointing out terrorists if they know 40,000 of their countrymen are supporting them.

This has to look like the decisive battle. If the Iraqi Army wins, there won't be reprisals against civilians who cooperate. The scum who would carry out the reprisals will be dead.

I sincerely hope the Iraqi Army shows no mercy. The terrorists have to be defeated psychologically. They have to see further action as futile. Seeing thousands of their comrades rounded up and summarily executed might help. Especially while their leader is hors de combat.

Well you make a cogen point. I sincerely hope you're right that the advantage gained isn't spent on the element of surprise.

Ping! By the way, according to al Hayat, the tribe members in Zarqaw of Jordan that supports Zarqawi said that Zarqawi was injured two weeks ago in Al Qaim with injures in his right Kidney during the raids by US Force. If this is true, we missed him during Operation Matador. Damn!

That makes more since though. At the start of Matador they said .We hit very strong fighting ( meaning to me better than usual ) So if true zarq's been bleeding for awhile . Seems to me they would know by now if he was going to make it or is going to die or is dead.

I can't find any online version. If some one could read Arabic, maybe some one may translate the article (click read on-line). However, I am not sure if today's edition (day) is the one that has the article. If not here, it may appear on MEMRI that often translates Al Hayat's news articles. We will have to wait for that.

Point taken. But don't you think there's more strategic advantage if you don't actually put it out on the AP wire service? I mean, they could do most of the prep work very late at night and early pre-dawn hours and have some advantage in that.

There, I think I'm thinking.
