Is Islam ready, as Miss Indonesia dons a swimsuit for beauty pageant?

PHUKET, Thailand (AFP) - Indonesia hasn't sent a contestant to the Miss Universe pageant in almost a decade, since its last competitor dared to show up at the swimwear event, incurring a ban from then dictator Suharto.

But Artika Sari Devi, a 25-year-old law graduate and this year's Indonesian ambassador, says that despite vocal opposition from religious groups back home, she believes the world's largest Muslim nation is ready to compete once again.

When she slipped into a swimsuit on a Phuket beach with other contestants last week, Artika knew was stepping into uncharted territory.

Look at the shadow under her chin. Does look photoshopped. I don't care, I still love her.

The big problem is still the swimsuit competition," she pointed out as she wrapped a towel around her waist. "But today in Indonesia, we can see many people wearing swimsuits at the beach."

Yes, but I'll bet most are males, and the rest most likely have their owners with them, holding their leashes, ready to beat them for any wayward glances they may elicit.

She is a pretty girl, perhaps her family will display that photo at her funeral. Probably not however, since it will likely be a family member who kills her. After appearing publicly in a swim suit her family will need to murder her to regain its honor.

The sad part about this is that Indonesia, in some ways, would be the perfect place to demonstrate what an actual "moderate" Muslim-majority state looks like.

They had one of the most progressive heads of state, Aburahman Wahid, for a brief period, before he was forced out by his enemies under trumped up accusations of political corruption.

When he was the head of the NU-and a political dissident under the Suharto regime-he demonstrated the same leadership qualities that would later reflect his abbreviated tenure in office as the first truly democratically elected leader of that country.

Unfortunately, the current feckless leadership isn't willing to stand up to the apocalyptic Muslim radicals that have forced their way into the political system.

If they could treat these Salafi lunatics in the same manner as the Aceh separatists, then perhaps Indonesia might be a great country.

But this happens with every moderate Muslim state. Eventually, the king or shah gets overthrown.

Indonesia was a moderate Muslim majority state in the 1970s when I lived there during the Suharto regime. You could buy pork, drink alcohol, and go to nightclubs and bars. There were churches and practicing Christians. I suspect that still exists today despite the ascendency of the radical Muslims. There are many influences on Indonesian culture, which is diverse and rich.

The current leader is a vile, corrupt POS with 1002 kickbacks to himself. Everything from nightclubs and supermarkets to the electric company.

They do, and pay stiff graft to the government.

There are several predominantly Muslim countries that participate in the Miss Universe contest. They include Egypt, Turkey, and Malaysia.

Feminists? Puritanical? The ones who burned their bras and cried for gender equity in the sexual revolution?

Yes, the puritanical left. Feminists are the loudest critics of beauty contests. If in power, they would eliminate them. They also want to castrate all men--turn them into eunuchs without any instinctual connections to life.

A woman's power used to lie in her feminine charms. A nice figure gives a woman great influence over a man. But the feminists don't need that. So burn their bras and make men ashamed of being men. Then the manly-looking women can take charge and rule.

What, you looked at my breast? That's sexual harrassment and I will sue you, demand money, and get a job promotion because you are an oppressive, dirty man with a healthy instinctual response to life.

Gays and lesbians, respectively, are not puritans.

Lesbians reject the word gay to refer to themselves, so gay refers to homosexual men. I do not know if gays are feminists or not.

Many lesbians are feminists and if feminist then puritanical. They detest a man looking at them with a healthy, instinctive response. So a feminist, whether lesbian or not, must dress like a man in clothes that hide the feminine figure. And if a man does respond to them as an attractive woman, then its time for a sexual harrassment suite. Feminists detest the instinctual side of men, suppress it, legislate against it, and condemn it as the puritans that they are.

We should not be judged by our physical appearance.

LOL! In a beauty contest? Geez, you need wings to stay above that BS.

Why not everyone involved just stay home and submitt papers?

and the winner is...
