Pharmacy employee shoots, kills robber
San Diego Union ^ | May 28, 2005 | Mark Arner

An employee of a North Park pharmacy said he shot and killed a man who tried to rob the business and then threatened him with a weapon, police said.

The attempted robbery of the Fed RX Pharmacy on 30th Street at Lincoln Avenue was reported to police at 11:36 a.m., said San Diego police Lt. Kevin Rooney.

Patrol officers arrived at the scene six minutes later and found the body of David S. Robuck, 32, slumped inside the front door. Three hours later, the weapon that he had reportedly tried to grab just before the shooting was still tucked into his waistband, Rooney said.

Police later determined the weapon was a plastic replica revolver.

The Medical Examiner's Office had no information about where Robuck lived. His mother in Indiana was notified of his death.

As detectives and homicide investigators took photographs, interviewed witnesses and gathered evidence, police blocked vehicular and pedestrian traffic for about two hours from a block-long section of 30th Street, between University and Lincoln avenues.

The street was reopened about 2 p.m.

The employee who told police he shot the intruder was among three workers in the pharmacy when the man walked in, Rooney said.

The intruder was wearing sunglasses, dark clothing and latex gloves, Rooney said. Before he was shot, he demanded prescription drugs and reached for the weapon in his waistband, Rooney said.

The employee told police he recognized the man as someone who had robbed the business of prescription drugs on April 11.

Rooney said he was not sure whether THE VICTIM had been involved in the April robbery.

THE VICTIM

As others have asked, why is the perp a victim? I love stories with happy endings.

Love the way the paper turns the thug into " a victim"

That was my first impression, but in fairness to the reporter, he was quoting the police lieutenant Rooney, who redeemed himself at the end: When asked if an employee of a business has a right to shoot someone during a robbery, Rooney replied "If someone feels their life is threatened, they are allowed to defend themselves."

I just wonder who asked such a stupid question or if it was just a rhetorical method of getting the Lt. to state the obvious.

A Fearless Forecast - If the newspaper researches the perp's background they will find:
a) He has a record as long as your arm
b) He was out on parole
c) He was let out early for good behaviour
d) He got a reduced charge due to plea-bargaining
e) All of the above

Who wrote this -- a fourth grader?

"An employee of a North Park pharmacy said he shot and killed a man who tried to rob the business and then threatened him with a weapon, police said."

He shot and killed him, then threatened him with a weapon?

"Three hours later, the weapon that he had reportedly tried to grab just before the shooting was still tucked into his waistband, Rooney said."

What is the significance of this statement? If no one does anything, it'll be there three weeks from now.

"Before he was shot, he demanded prescription drugs and reached for the weapon in his waistband, Rooney said."

Again, how about, "He was shot when he demanded ...".

"The employee who told police he shot the intruder was among three workers in the pharmacy when the man walked in, Rooney said."

Let's try, "According to police, the employee who shot the intruder robber was among ...".

Then, to top it off, they call the scumbag a victim.

If you can't in your heart find a little neutrality when writing your articles, can you at least learn how to fake it? Jeeze!

This 'reporter' is SO obviously not a female...

Hmm. Apparently, according to the byline (yes, I know, I should have read it first) the name professes the gender to be a female. OK, in accordance with today's Politically-Correct sensitivities I will refrain from any observations about the reporter's personal preferences, LOL...

Donning My Asbestos Underthings now... *grin*

"Police later determined the weapon was a plastic replica revolver"

guess the "victim's" family will be suing the manufacturer of the toy gun for making it so real-looking as to fool the robbery VICTIM into thinking it was real.

No flames from this quarter, I'm too busy trying to dig a hole to hide in myself.

For the same naughty thoughts crossed my mind as well.

I made the mistake of reading the postings on this website and I can't remember the last time that words have hurt me as much as these have. David Robuck is my cousin. My family in no way agreed with the lifestyle he lived. He had a serious addiction and, unfortunately, would go to great lengths to support that addiction. My family is a strong Christian family that has prayed for him for many years. Outside of his addiction, David was a good person and would NEVER hurt anyone. We learned of his death shortly after it happened and we understand the actions of the clerk. I think I speak for David's mom when I say you WILL NOT see a headline that reads "Victim's Mother Sues Fed RX Pharmacy for Wrongful Death of Her Son." My family and I pray that you would try to understand that David had a good heart and came from a good family. All I ask is that you think about the innocent people you are hurting when you make insinuations such as the ones that you have.

You forgot to mention that when interviewed one of his relatives will say,
"He was really a nice kid and was just starting to turn his life around."

It is a happy ending.
The criminal is toast, and his intended victims live.
Pop the bubbly, cheers, huzzah!
Shame on you for trying to excuse criminal behavior.
