It was the summer of 1972 and John Kerry's group, the Vietnam Veterans Against the War, was in the midst of an anti-war march through the streets of downtown Gainesville. ... I was disgusted to see that they were not only carrying the American flag upside down, they were carrying the flag of the communist Viet Cong as well.

...The freedom to protest is an important one. ...However, we did not go into harm's way to allow our fellow citizens to help our enemy. ...Now, we have some new Hollywood military experts. The latest is comedian Bill Maher, who made a fool out of himself after Sept. 11, 2001...now he is at it again....

This article was "Special to the Orlando Sentinel" -- not written by a regular columnist for the Sentinel, but by Charles M. Grist. The Sentinel says "Grist is an Army veteran of both Vietnam and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is a master police officer with the Altamonte Springs Police Department." How does someone like Bill Maher get his own TV show? He's not just politically incorrect- he's just incorrect.

Maher is one of the worst of the worst. On a par with Paul Begala.

Looking at Maher, he actually looks like a demonic being to me. Maybe he is?

I don't care if he apologizes. Seriously--would anyone believe it was sincere?

Let him spout his stupidity--that's what free speech is for.

What a team. Begala takes the prize, though. When he gets that wimpy fake smile going while he's spouting his lies it makes me want to kick the TV. He looks like that guy on Saturday Night Live (which I never watch so I don't know his name).

If I was Mr. Grist, I wouldn't hold my breathe waiting for an apology---the Bill Mahers of the world have ALL of the answers, doncha know?!

They have all of the answers, but they don't have a "CLUE"!!!

IMHO, the freedom to protest is NOT a very important freedom. It is the cause of considerable anguish, it greatly impedes progress, and it is generally exercised irresponsibly.

We'd all be better off if it were curtailed a bit, or if it were only available in even-numbered years.

Wasn't his brain-gruel program canceled once because he ran his mouth about the 9/11 victims? Now he's blundered into the US Army's sights. Bad choice, Bill. Keep it up and you're going to be MC'ing karaoke night at the local Grill 'n' Grog.

"How does someone like Bill Maher get his own TV show?"

Simple, the secret to his success is that he is an asshole. Hollywood, and the liberal media are full of them and so it is actually a prerequisite to getting a TV show such as his. If not him than it would just be another much like him.

I despise Maher especially though.

It's not the freedom to protest that worries me; it's that the freedom was conceived in an era when people had a common view of what morality consists of and the importance of depending on your fellow man to get things done -- therefore you did not insult the common morality lightly.

Now we have become so extraordinarily affluent in comparison that people no longer understand the impact of their words on their fellow man, just as they no longer have to weed the garden, milk the cow or kill the chicken to eat dinner.

You know, this observation is quite profound. How else will we know the princes from the frogs? I only wish more people would exercise their freedom of choice in this matter of discerning a person's real motives by his or her speech.

"Bill Mahler's parents owe everyone an apology."

Here's a link to his bio on NoNameDataBase (nndb.com). It contains a number of surprises:

http://www.nndb.com/people/399/000022333/

To me, this guy is suffering from a serious case of self-loathing. Neither of his parents gave him a worldview containing hope, not to mention humility or duty. We should all pray for him.

I must disagree with your view.

The right of protest is the single most essential aspect of those natural rights recognized by the specifically enumerated limits imposed on government power by the First Amendment.

I agree that we'd be better off if those who protest displayed some self-restraint, but I cannot agree that it should be "curtailed a bit" (implicit: curtailed by law) - that is unconstitutional.
