General slams Amnesty report - (McCain urges "congressional oversight of Gitmo")

Gen. Richard B. Myers yesterday condemned as "absolutely irresponsible" an Amnesty International report that compared prisoner treatment at Guantanamo Bay to the Soviet gulag, adding that 100 out of 68,000 detainees held in the war against terrorism were abused.

Amnesty International also suggested that foreign governments investigate senior U.S. officials involved in "torture scandals" and arrest and question Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, former CIA Director William Tenet, and Vice President Dick Cheney. "I think it's irresponsible. I think it's absolutely irresponsible," Gen. Myers told "Fox News Sunday."

We've had 100 cases of substantiated abuse and there are 100 individuals that have had some sort of action taken, either court-martial or administrative action," Gen. Myers said. Sen. John McCain, Arizona Republican, brushed off Amnesty's suggestion for investigations of top U.S. officials, saying "that isn't going to happen," but added that Congress needs to exercise more diligent oversight of military prison conditions and the treatment of detainees. He told CNN's "Late Edition" that the Defense Department has adopted uniform rules for the treatment of war prisoners and said all government agencies, including the CIA, should follow suit because reports of prisoner abuse have damaged the reputation of the U.S. military.

McCain urges "congressional oversight of Gitmo"

If you think something's not working right, you couldn't possibly ask for a more crack team of troubleshooters and fixer uppers than those underpaid, selfless young hotshot go-getters in congress.

"It isn't fair. Life isn't fair. We've got to repair that damage," said Mr. McCain,

As long as the liberal media has it's say .. that will never happen

Many in the media would prefer to believe the terrorists that want to kill Americans .. then the military that is trying to protect our freedoms

A prison run by a congressional committee... I obviously stayed up too late.

Is this is a nightmare, or am I drunker than a barrel full of monkeys...?

McCain is a piece of trash, and he better hope his little MSM miniseries saves his arse at the polls. Me thinks he has no shot at the run against the beast in 08.

"Amnesty International report that compared prisoner treatment at Guantanamo Bay to the Soviet gulag"

Not quite. Here is the quote: "The detention facility at Guantánamo Bay has become the gulag of our times, entrenching the practice of arbitrary and indefinite detention in violation of international law."

It's a fair assessment. I disagree, but fair...and irrational.

"It isn't fair. Life isn't fair. We've got to repair that damage"

What's the meaning here? Fairness to the detainees? "Life isn't fair" What is he saying? "repair the damage" meaning our reputation or the to the detainees?

Maybe Amnesty needs to do a little homework and really learn what happend in Soviet Gulags. It's pretty common knowledge what the Soviets did. Here is an elementary beginning:
http://www.paulmitchinson.com/gulag.html
A question one must ask is If you had a choice would you rather be a prison in the Soviet gulag or the American Guantanamo?

But .. just like the dimocrats - he will play his hand too far and it will explode in his face.

I was watching the replay of Meet the Press - and at the end, Russert ask Lugar about Bolton. Lugar's answer was interesting. He said, "Dr. Frist will take care of it" .. or something similar to that .. and Lugar had this smirk on his face. It was really funny. Lugar assured Russert there would be a vote and Bolton would be confirmed. I guess we'll find out Tuesday.

McCain has gone from pompous to plain silly.

Congressional oversight? They can't even oversee themselves.

Can anybody spell "Keating"!
