German parties would boost U.S. ties
Big News Network Saturday 4th June, 2005 (UPI)
Germany's Christian Democrats and their Free Democratic partners say they would boost U.S. relations and downgrade Russian ties, should they win election.
We have great interest in close relations with Russia, but they have to be balanced and should in no way be directed against the Atlantic partnership, said Wolfgang Schaeuble, deputy chairman of the Christian Democratic Union. We would change this nonsense and re-establish the balance in German-Russian relations.
Guido Westerwelle, chairman of the Free Democratic Party, the conservative Christian Democrats junior partner, said Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, a Social Democrat, undermined U.S. ties and criticized Washington more often than Moscow, reported the Washington Times Saturday.
It is not acceptable that the German government is often very critical of Washington -- sometimes rightfully so -- but stays silent on Russian violations of legal matters, he said.
German officials denied Schroeder had become close with Russia's Vladimir Putin at the expense of U.S. President George Bush. Government officials said the chancellor had been working well with Bush since healing the rift over the war in Iraq.
Ping!
As an American, who cares.
Germans make good beer.
No thanks, Germany.
True, true, true. No argument there.
BUT, so does Panama (where I live). Panama makes great beer.
Why? I'd love to see the US split off Germany from France. The SPD and their leftist partners have used anti-Americanism to deflect attention away from the chronic 10%+ unemployment rate in Germany that is largely due to their socialist policies. Fortunately the leftist parties can't get away with this indefinitely, because the German economy isn't getting any better. With the proposed EU constitution going down in flames, now is a good time to drive in a wooden stake.
Hmmm...I like the sound of that.
;-)
As an English-American I care! When the German, as in German-American, is no longer descibed as a "Nazi" all European culture will improve. This improvement must come from Germany. Germans should insist that the "Nazi" label be discarded. Their government should work on this.
I understand your sentiment, but I think it's nearly as important to turn the tide on socialism in Europe as it is to do it here. Obviously, there's only so much we can do, but if these parties start to gain momentum and they want to come to us instead of expecting us to come to them, then I see that as a good thing for us.
Now that all the heavy lifting has been done in in Afganistan and Iraq ?............
It's okay because there will be many more battles against terrorist before this is all over and we will need the help.
As an American, who cares.

Yeah, after the heavy lifting, the heavy dying, and the heavy spending in Iraq is done, and the EU going down in flames. Gee, didn't probably thousands of us predict this scenario? Where are your kneepads, Schroeder ???
If the CDU wins, France will lose a valuable ally of its anti-American union. It will also make it much more easier to gain assistance from Europe for interests of US. One of the main issues today would be military exports to China from European countries, which may be one of the reason for China to appeal about concerns for the fall of the current regime.
Many younger people in Germany are trying to do just that. (rid the Nazi title)
They are tired of being labled for something some folks did 60+ yrs ago.
In the past three years Gerhard Schroeder and his ally, the former street thug Joschka Fischer, have managed to deeply poison the relationship between Germany and the USA - the USA which had been Germany's best friend in the world since WWII. This will not be easily healed, but the CDU/CSU/FDP coalition will try and I suspect will have some success. The underlying problem is that Germany's leftwing intelligentsia hates America - as does America's own leftwing intelligentsia.

C'mon, at least Germany sent SOME troops to Afghanistan! I know, those included very few special forces units and combat troops, and a lot more peacekeeping units. But hey, 9,000 soldiers on missions around the world is actually a big step for a country where only ten years ago any out-of-area-mission would have been unthinkable ;-).

It's actually amazing how fast Schroeder and Fischer are being forgotten ALREADY NOW. With the red-green coalition unable to pass any bill it's almost like having no government at all *LOL. Many people here are just longing for a fresh start with Angela Merkel and simply want to leave that "red-green experiment" behind them for good.
Great news, both unfriendly axis Franco-German and Russo-German would be weakened if not destroyed.
