ACLU Endorses Federal Hate Crimes Legislation...(ACLU Alert)
ACLU ^ | 05/31/05 | ACLU Press release

Posted on 06/05/2005 8:05:24 PM PDT by huac

"...the American Civil Liberties Union today endorsed a new hate crimes bill introduced by Rep. John Conyers (D-MI)...The Conyers measure, which includes protections against hate crimes committed on the bases of gender identity and sexual orientation, also includes an explicit ban on the use of speech or association to prove criminal activity, unless it specifically relates to the crime..."This carefully crafted measure shows that you can prosecute hate crimes without attacking freedom of expression," ..."Federal legislation addressing hate crimes is necessary because state and local law enforcement officers sometimes do not act because of either inadequate resources or their own bias against the victim,"..."

So... you can scream "faggot" at the top of your lungs, as long as you aren't beating one to death while doing so?

Doesn't the ACLU have anything better to do, like representing NAMBLA?

It is NOT needed. Crime is crime. How dare the gov't try to make an immoral person worth more than a moral person in the eyes of the law.

There isn't a criminal in America that the Communist ACLU doesn't love, so I guess the ACLU won't be committing any hate crimes.

Hate crimes legislation is the another step in a process that will criminalize any speech that the Left finds offensive; i.e. anything that comes from the Right. It is an attempt to take First Amendment Rights away from their political opponents. Nothing more.

I think the understated target here is the Christian church. This bill would target ministers preaching about the evil of homosexuality.

I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

The ACLU endorses Thought Crimes.

More hypocrisy from the Doc Shredders over at the American Selective Liberties Union.

Soon, FRiend, soon. Probably when Hitlery is inaugurated, or when the USSC OK's rounding up all the privately-owned firearms.

Keep your powder dry, and stay safe.

Somebody 'splain to me, exactly, the difference between a 'regular' crime and a 'hate' crime.

Isn't a crime a crime?

Don't we already have laws which punish the criminal?

I'm mostly against EVERYTHING that the ACLU is for, besides the ACLU is a Commie pretending to be Pro-American while attacking & destroying American traditional values.

"...this hate crimes bill does not cover Americans or Christians..."

Or evil Caucasians or heterosexuals, which makes sense, as the ACLU knows that we are usually the perpetrators in these cases.

"Crime is crime"

Not on the ACLU animal farm. Some animals are more equal than others.

I really am not impressed with a group of shyster "lawyers" who see the Boy Scouts of America as evil and Islamic terrorists as the good guys.

"...Doesn't the ACLU have anything better to do, like representing NAMBLA?..."

While freeing child-rapers is an important job, the ACLU can always find time to attack fundemental American ideals of fairness.
