They're baaack....those wild and wacky Senate Democrats, theypick up today where they left off before Memorial day. I have to say, I am sooooooo sick of Deep Throat, Watergate, Felt, and his whole family, and Woodward and Berstein, it's actually good to get back to Biden, Kennedy, Schumer, et al. Follow along with us throughout the day, if you're able; we had some marvellously informative and entertaining threads a week ago.
1. The Senate is scheduled to take up the nomination of Janet Rogers Brown. Under the sell out, er, compromise agreement, she will get a vote. Pryor will follow her. Both votes could come this week. Look for Frist to file cloture after two days of debate.
2. When last we left the Senate chamber, with all senators milling around the floor, The Dems had filabustered Bolton's nomination. Look for Frist to revisit it again this week. On ABC's Sunday show, Biden said that the Dems probably did NOT have the votes to sustain a filabuster. Note that here he admitted it was a filabuster, whereas in the letter he sent to his Dem colleagues, he said it wasn't one. Bush told him he wasn't getting the documents, and it looks like most of the other Dem senators want this issue to go away. They see it giving them no benefit.
3. BTW..FYI..just saw a blurb on the tube that on Hardball tonight, Chrissie will have all the senators who signed the compromise agreement on for a discussion. Awfully sudden for a reuniuon show, me thinks. Anyways, here's another chance for all you fans of McCain, Graham, and DeWine to view your "heroes" up close.
4. John Kerry has promised to raise the "Downing Street memo" on the Senate floor, perhaps today. He has also promised that he has already signed the Form 180. We shall see.
What to look for: Everyone is generally in agreement that the last Senate week wasn't one of Frist's better moments. Whether or not he was ineffectual as leader, or set-up by Dems and Pubbies straying off the reservation, we don't know, but I do think he needs to start off this week very strong. To show he's in charge, to assert control. Therefore, during the first hour, Leader's time, I look for him to come out on the attack, and take it to the Dems for Bolton and other matters. He's got to set the tone, not let Searchlight seize the agenda. So expect him to say he will call up the other nominations, the ones not covered by the compromise, and not the ten or so the Dems have already said they want to approve. Frist doesn't want to give Reid cover for a filabuster.
One last item: Will Voinovich cry on the Senate floor after Bolton is confirmed?
FYI..
The US Senate is back in session.
Tag line mega kudos bumperooski...
bttt
Can you put me on your ping list, please.
Let's see what the keagle has to say about her.
I knew there was a reason that I felt a lot safer all week last week.
I wonder if she would do to him as Condi did to Barbara Boxer and say in a stern voice to please not impugn her character.
It would make a pretty picture, considering his past. And heck, it works with the present too.
I'd wager he won't speak..BTW..did you see the thread this weekend showing Sheets in a dead heat poll for the Seante in 2006?
Please add me to ping list too. I don't always participate in the thread but I read it all the time. I don't like to watch the Senate as I can't afford to buy a new t.v. LOL
And you think Bush would do a few recess appointments. Hell, he didn't make any kind of deal with the Dems....not obligated in any way to appease.
Hope so.....
Just in from the Dark Side. They called Kerry's office to kiss his boots about the Downing Street Memo but Kerry will not bring up the Downing Street Memo today because he is not in Washington. Kerry (AS USUAL) missed his first day back at work!
Oh god. Please pass the popcorn.
Is it too much to hope that he might lose his stuff like gore did?
